Overview

An exciting opportunity for an experienced Health Care Assistant to join the Macular service at St Paul’s, Royal Liverpool Hospital, on a part-time basis. The successful candidate will have experience within a hospital Ophthalmology unit and experience with Macular patients undergoing intravitreal injections. The role includes general health care as well as assisting the specialist nurse practitioners and medical staff within the macular service. The post holder will work under the supervision of a registered nurse to provide the highest possible standard of care for patients and their families/carers.

Responsibilities
  • Participates in all aspects of patient care with particular attention to personal hygiene and grooming.
  • Provision of patients’ toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
  • Carry out any movement and handling within the safe practice guidelines from mandatory training and in relation to the patient’s manual handling plan.
  • Obtaining specimens from patients for testing.
  • Removal of cannulae, catheters and nasogastric tubes.
  • Undertake the dressing of non-complex wounds (in accordance with identified competencies and in conjunction with the plan of care).
  • Prepare and maintain environments for clinical treatments and investigations.
  • Prepare patients for treatments, investigations or procedures including offering support and answering questions appropriate to own knowledge/experience.
  • Collection of blood products from laboratory as requested.
  • Chaperoning and escorting patients to clinical departments within the hospital and to other hospitals for investigations.
  • Assist Registered Nurse in performing last offices.
  • General and clinical observations of patients, reporting anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff. Recording of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiration rate. Oxygen saturation monitoring.
  • Undertake blood glucose monitoring, venepuncture and/or cannulation upon the direction of the registered nurse.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Experience within a hospital Ophthalmology unit.
  • Experience with Macular patients undergoing intravitreal injections.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on a variety of IT systems.
  • Ability to work under the supervision of a registered nurse within the Macular Service Department.
