Job summary

A leading consulting firm is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to deliver an effective management system across the Council in Stoke-on-Trent. The successful candidate will oversee health and safety policies, lead a team, and ensure compliance with legal requirements, fostering a strong safety culture. Must have a NEBOSH Diploma and project management experience. This role offers up to £40.70 per hour and is initially a 6-month contract.

  • Proven success of obtaining senior management buy-in.

Overview

What\u2019s involved with this role: Health & Safety Manager 5276026

Location: Stoke 5276026

Pay: Up to \u00a340.70 per hour PAYE (Provisional pay rate - to be confirmed)

Contract: 6 months initial contract

The role

To deliver an effective health and safety management system across the Council, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and supporting the wellbeing of employees, contractors, and the public.

Key accountabilities
  • Lead the Health and Safety Support team, providing advice and guidance to managers.
  • Oversee health and safety policies, accident management, wellbeing initiatives, and problem-solving.
  • Support and coach managers to improve team performance and maintain a customer-focused approach.
  • Promote a strong safety culture by linking values, behaviours, and leadership.
  • Manage Service Level Agreements with Directorates and schools to ensure consistent delivery.
  • Create a safe and healthy workplace that supports both physical and mental wellbeing.
  • Encourage best practice in health and safety and gain commitment to continuous improvement.
Key criteria
  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent
  • Project management experience
  • Proven success of obtaining senior management buy-in to the health and safety agenda in the context of facilitating the overall business plans.
  • Ability to deal with very complex safety issues and find intelligent solutions to resolve them
  • Advising senior management how to resolve complex and serious health and safety issues
  • High level of oral and written skills
  • Relevant experience in managing a team of health and safety staff
  • Working within a unionised environment and negotiating regularly with Trade Unions
