bpha is a forward-thinking housing association, on a mission to build thriving communities where people can live happily in a home they can afford.

We work right across the Oxford to Cambridge Arc, and own or manage over 19,500 homes. As one of the top 25 Housing Association developers in the country, we remain committed to delivering high-quality affordable housing to those who need it the most. Our residents, shared owners, and leaseholders are at the core of everything we do at bpha, with every colleague playing an important part in ensuring we provide them with excellent customer service and maintain our role as a responsible landlord.

To support these objectives, our Health, Safety and Environment Team is looking for an apprentice to join the team. This is an apprentice post lasting 24 months; you will be studying towards Level 3 Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Technician Apprenticeship Standard, which can lead to membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. The Certificate will give you a grounding in basic principles of health, safety, and environmental principles, including the regulatory environment and the key disciplines of risk assessment and accident investigation. This core qualification will open doors to all sectors of the health, safety, and environment profession, depending on the direction you wish your career to take.

You will have the opportunity to learn about health, safety, and environmental risks in the housing sector and gain real-life experience of how these risks are mitigated.

What you will be doing:
  • Health and safety training – conduct toolbox talks and training for colleagues.
  • Accident and incident investigation – gather evidence and capture actions for improvement.
  • Administering the lone worker device provision.
  • Health, safety, and environmental auditing – carry out audits and document process improvements.
  • Environmental sustainability – collate environmental performance data and monitor the implementation of the environmental action plan.

You don’t need any prior health, safety, and environmental or housing knowledge, but we’d love to meet someone with:

  • Naturally inquisitive and observant to identify hazards.
  • Investigative and problem-solving skills for audits and investigations.
  • Good administrative skills, with an attention to detail and accurate data inputting ability.
  • IT literacy, including Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • A desire to learn.
  • A flexible approach; working in the team, you must be ready to deal with the unexpected.
  • The commitment and drive to deliver excellent customer service to our residents, colleagues, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to drive and access to a car.

Please note, if you are in funded education or hold an equivalent level in the same subject, you are not eligible to apply.

Amongst what we offer you is:

  • 28 days holiday plus Bank Holidays.
  • Free life assurance.
  • Access to an extensive suite of wellbeing services and tools, including a digital gym.
  • Opportunities for learning and development.
