After 1 August 2020, Education Authorities can only appoint the following categories of people as permanent Head Teachers:

  1. People who have achieved the Standard for Headship.
  2. People appointed as permanent Head Teachers of a public school, a grant-aided school or an independent school on or before 1 August 2020.

A person who has not yet achieved the Standard for Headship may be appointed as a head teacher, provided the appointment does not exceed 30 months.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Successful candidates will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment and the cost will be met by the candidate.


The fee for a Full PVG Scheme Membership is £59 or Existing Member is £18.


Bellsquarry Primary School and Early Learning Centre (ELC) is a non-denominational school serving the Bellsquarry and Murieston area of Livingston which is part of The James Young High School cluster.


The school roll is currently 225 learners, organised over 8 classes, as well as 36 children across the various sessions in the ELC. In addition to the class teachers, there is also 1 full-time Acting Principal Teacher and 1 part-time Acting Principal Teacher. There are currently 4 Pupil Support Workers deployed at various stages across the school. The ELC staffing includes 1 Early Years Officer, 5 Early Years Practitioners, and 2 Pupil Support Workers across the different sessions. The school benefits from a supportive and proactive Parent Teacher Action Group (PTAG).


In the first instance, the Head Teacher, with Senior Officers, will be responsible for:

  • Creating a positive and ambitious agenda for the whole school community.
  • Developing creative and innovative approaches to the future development of the curriculum in line with West Lothian's Digital Strategy.
  • Developing working relationships across the cluster primary schools and with James Young High School.
  • Developing school policies in line with national and local guidance.
  • Managing the recruitment process of teaching and support staff.
  • Leading and developing a dynamic staff team that will deliver excellence in learning, teaching and assessment.
