Job description

Location: Manchester
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent

About Us

Bell Building Projects (BBP) is a growing construction company delivering refurbishment, façade replacement, fire remediation and new-build projects across the UK.

We're proud of the reputation we've built, but even more proud of the people behind it. Our continued growth has created a strong pipeline of work, giving our teams long-term job security, opportunities to develop their careers and the chance to work on a wide variety of projects.

We believe in investing in our people, recognising good performance and creating an environment where everyone is trusted, supported and encouraged to progress. Whether you're joining us on site or in one of our offices, you'll be part of a team that values quality, collaboration and doing things the right way.

The Role

We're looking for an experienced Head of Technical to join our Manchester team and take overall responsibility for the technical and design management functions across the business.

This is a senior leadership role, working closely with our Directors, regional management teams and Design Managers to ensure our projects are delivered to the highest technical standards.

We're looking for someone who can do more than oversee design delivery. We want someone who can challenge existing processes, identify opportunities for improvement and help develop a more consistent and effective approach to technical management across the business.

With projects predominantly focused on façade replacement, external wall remediation and refurbishment, the successful candidate will need a strong understanding of building regulations, construction methodology, technical compliance and design coordination.

You'll play a key role in supporting our continued growth, developing our technical teams and ensuring that technical risks are identified and managed effectively throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, manage and develop our team of Design Managers across the UK, providing technical guidance, support and direction.
  • Oversee the technical and design management functions across multiple projects, ensuring consistency in approach and standards.
  • Review and challenge design proposals, specifications, drawings and technical submissions to ensure compliance, quality and buildability.
  • Provide technical oversight of submissions from our sister division, Bell Sustainable Roofing (BSR), ensuring they meet project requirements and relevant technical standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Building Regulations, the Building Safety Act and other relevant legislation, particularly in relation to fire safety and higher-risk buildings.
  • Oversee the management of Golden Thread information, ensuring technical documentation is accurate, complete and appropriately maintained throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify and manage technical and design risks, working with project teams and external consultants to resolve issues before they impact delivery.
  • Review and improve existing design management procedures, technical review processes, reporting and quality assurance systems.
  • Establish consistent technical standards and best practices across all regions.
  • Work closely with the Pre-Construction, Commercial and Operational teams to ensure technical requirements are considered from tender stage through to project completion.
  • Support the appointment, coordination and performance management of external design consultants.
  • Provide technical input into tender submissions, design reviews, value engineering and construction methodologies.
  • Support and mentor Design Managers, identifying development opportunities and improving technical capability across the team.
  • Keep up to date with changes in building regulations, industry guidance and construction best practices, ensuring these are reflected in our internal procedures.
About You

We're looking for someone with a strong technical background in construction who has the experience, confidence and leadership skills to take ownership of our technical function.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Significant experience in a senior technical or design management role within a main contractor or specialist construction business.
  • A strong understanding of façade systems, building envelopes, cladding replacement and external wall remediation.
  • Experience managing and developing Design Managers or multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • Excellent knowledge of UK Building Regulations, the Building Safety Act, fire safety requirements and Golden Thread principles.
  • Experience reviewing complex technical submissions, construction drawings, specifications and design information.
  • A good understanding of construction methodology, buildability and the practical challenges of delivering projects on site.
  • Experience coordinating external consultants, specialist subcontractors and design teams.
  • The ability to identify technical risks, challenge proposals and provide practical solutions.
  • Strong communication skills, with the confidence to work alongside Directors, clients, consultants and operational teams.
  • A proactive approach to improving processes, developing standards and introducing more efficient ways of working.

A relevant qualification in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline would be advantageous.

Above all, we're looking for someone who is technically strong, commercially aware and genuinely interested in improving how we operate.

What We Offer
  • A senior leadership opportunity within an established and growing construction business.
  • The opportunity to influence and develop our technical and design management functions.
  • A varied portfolio of projects across the UK.
  • A supportive working environment with direct access to senior leadership.
  • Competitive salary, dependent on experience.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Generous annual leave entitlement.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities for continued professional development and career progression.
