What are we looking for?

Reporting directly to the Director, Legal & Practice Group Chair, International, in the Cleveland Clinic Law Department based in the United States, the Head of Legal for Cleveland Clinic London (CCL) will act as the sole London-based legal counsel. The role involves providing legal advice and oversight across CCL activities, supported by enterprise-wide Cleveland Clinic Law and Compliance Departments and external legal counsel as needed. The position requires close collaboration with the CCL Executive Team and reports dually to the Director and the Chief Commercial Officer at CCL.

What will your duties include?

  • Serve as the first point of contact for the CCL Executive and leadership teams, providing timely, business-focused legal advice on:
    • Strategic projects and transactions
    • Regulatory compliance (including CMA, CQC, and GMC)
    • Healthcare legal matters
    • Data protection
    • Employment law
    • Corporate and charity governance
    • Dispute resolution, including patient complaints, inquests, and litigation
  • Manage legal support requests from various departments, including clinical, commercial, compliance, finance, HR, information governance, cybersecurity, operations, and strategy.
  • Ensure prompt legal advice responses
  • Participate in internal committees, such as compliance and conflict of interest committees
  • Supervise and mentor US-based Cleveland Clinic Law Department members working on CCL and UK law matters; delegate tasks appropriately.
  • Contribute to budget planning for CCL and oversee outside counsel cost-effectively.
  • Maintain expertise in relevant legal areas, advise and train department members on legal developments, and ensure ongoing compliance.

What we need from you?

  • Qualified UK lawyer with a strong academic record
  • License to practice law in England and Wales or a jurisdiction permitting practice in England and Wales, with at least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Experience in healthcare regulatory law and broad generalist legal experience
  • Minimum of 10 years' post-qualification experience
  • Strong legal skills, including drafting, negotiation, communication, and project management
  • Preferred: In-house UK healthcare experience
  • Desirable: UK employment and charity law experience
