The unique combination of broking and underwriting divisions provides the ability to quote and bind risks through inhouse binding authorities, while providing customers with access to Lloyd’s, London Market companies, and Munich Re owned capacity in Germany and the US.

Overview

The Head of Claims Litigation is a key role in B&C’s growing Claims Department. This position manages and oversees insurance coverage and litigation matters, serving as a strategic partner to claim professionals and US Practice Leads. Responsibilities include providing coverage and litigation guidance across various lines of business, reviewing and drafting policy wording, and ensuring alignment with US Practice Leads.

Responsibilities
  1. Manage all insurance coverage and litigated claim matters to ensure positive outcomes for the business and clients.
  2. Provide legal advice on insurance coverage issues under casualty and property lines.
  3. Assist with coverage position letters and oversee outside counsel.
  4. Participate in strategic discussions on coverage issues with claims teams and stakeholders.
  5. Monitor US case law trends and advise stakeholders accordingly.
  6. Review policy language in collaboration with other departments.
  7. Train claim professionals on coverage and litigation topics.
  8. Seek continuous improvements in coverage and litigation processes.
  9. Develop a robust claims litigation control and reporting framework with US Practice leads.
  10. Monitor external legal partnerships' performance.
  11. Support claims strategy through proactive monitoring and challenge where necessary.
  12. Assess complex legal coverage issues for reserving purposes.
  13. Report to and liaise with Underwriting, Finance, Risk, and Audit teams.
  14. Prepare and present detailed reports to senior management and boards.
  15. Draft amendments to insurance contracts and related agreements.
General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adhere to B&C policies and procedures.
  • Possess professional experience in insurance coverage, preferably from a law firm or insurer.
  • Have a strong understanding of insurance law and coverage issues nationally.
  • Experience litigating coverage matters and drafting opinions and position letters.
  • Experience with various lines of business, especially commercial general liability and first-party property.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to manage multiple matters independently.
  • Diplomatic, approachable, and collaborative demeanor.
  • Willingness to travel.

This role is offered on a permanent basis. Salary will depend on experience.
