Grounds Maintenance Team Leader (Temporary, Ongoing)

Location: Exeter

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in maintaining and enhancing the appearance and safety of the streets, parks, and open spaces in Exeter for residents and visitors alike.

As a Team Leader, you will supervise and support Public and Green Space Operators, ensuring high standards of cleanliness and grounds maintenance across the city. This is a hands-on role that involves working outdoors in all weathers, responding to operational needs, and liaising with the public and council members.

Key Responsibilities

1. Plan and organise resources — including staff, equipment, and materials — to meet operational demands.
2. Supervise and support cleansing and grounds maintenance services across Exeter’s public spaces.
3. Conduct quarterly inspections of council playgrounds, reporting and arranging necessary maintenance or repairs.
4. Act as a visible ambassador for the Council, engaging with local people and businesses to help keep Exeter looking its best.
5. Work flexibly, including occasional evenings and weekends, to meet service demands.

About You

We’re looking for a confident and organised individual who thrives in a frontline, outdoor environment. You’ll have excellent problem-solving skills, experience in supervising field teams, and a solid understanding of health and safety requirements.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

• Proven experience in cleansing, horticultural, or grounds maintenance services.
• Experience of supervising operational field staff.
• Good communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
• A full, valid driving licence.
• Ability to undertake daily foot patrols and physically demanding tasks in outdoor conditions.
