Purpose of the Role
The General Manager is the most senior operational post at The Glamorganshire Golf Club, reporting to the Board. The post-holder provides visible leadership across every area of the Club — the course, pro shop, golf operations, bar, catering and administration — and translates the Board's strategy into effective day-to-day delivery. The role strengthens financial and operational control, develops the Club's people and services, and protects and promotes the Club's distinctive heritage. The General Manager is the sole authority on non-standard pricing and approves significant expenditure within limits delegated by the Board.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership, Governance & Operations
- Provide visible, day-to-day leadership across the course, pro shop, golf operations, bar, catering and administration functions
- Translate Board strategy into clear operational plans, priorities and measurable outcomes
- Report to the Board and committees, providing timely, accurate and constructive advice
- Act as the single point of escalation for operational issues and ensure responsibilities across departments are clear
- Manage all external suppliers, contractors and service providers, ensuring value, quality and accountability
- Maintain high standards of member and visitor experience throughout the Club
Financial & Commercial Management
- Lead the annual business planning and budgeting process, working closely with the Finance & Administration Manager
- Review monthly management accounts and cash flow, present results to the Board, and take timely action where performance varies from plan
- Approve all expenditure above agreed delegated thresholds
- Approve ALL non-standard pricing before it is communicated to any customer — this applies to societies, green fees, pro shop and functions without exception
- Drive sustainable revenue growth across membership, visitor golf, societies, events, hospitality, sponsorship and retail
- Strengthen commercial discipline while preserving the values and character of a member-owned club
- Ensure effective stock-control oversight across the pro shop, bar and greenkeeping operations
People & Culture
- Lead, support and hold to account the Club's departmental managers through regular one-to-ones, clear objectives and constructive performance management
- Oversee recruitment, induction, development and appraisal of all staff and, where necessary, formal employee processes, in line with Club procedures and employment law
- Conduct annual appraisals for all direct reports
- Ensure every member of staff has a current, signed job description at all times
- Ensure staffing structures, rotas and skills are appropriate for seasonal demand, events and member needs
- Build a collaborative, service-oriented culture that promotes fairness, professionalism, confidentiality and respect
Compliance, Risk & Club Standards
- Hold operational oversight of health and safety, licensing, insurance and other regulatory obligations across the Club
- Ensure suitable risk assessments, policies, records and reporting arrangements are current and consistently followed
- Protect Club assets, data, finances and reputation through sound controls and timely escalation
- Coordinate significant maintenance, waste removal and contractor activity within approved budgets and authority levels
Heritage, Events & External Relationships
- Champion the Club's three heritage assets — the Stableford system, the Barbarians RFC and Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC — to strengthen profile, participation and income
- Oversee the planning and delivery of the Club's heritage golf days, including the Dr Stableford, Barbarians and Dambusters events
- Lead all sponsorship and partnership discussions and develop constructive relationships with golf, sporting, community and commercial organisations
- Ensure the Club's heritage is presented well in the clubhouse and in all marketing materials
- Represent the Club professionally with members, visitors, governing bodies and external stakeholders
Administrative & Compliance Duties
- Maintain up-to-date licensing, insurance and regulatory compliance records
- Countersign all significant contracts and agreements on behalf of the Club
- Maintain oversight of all staff HR records via the Finance & Administration Manager
Standards & Conduct
- Present a professional image at all times when representing the Club
- Treat all members, visitors and staff with courtesy and respect
- Maintain strict confidentiality in all matters relating to staff and Club finances
- Ensure all decisions are fair, consistent and in the best long-term interest of the Club
