Job summary

Gentoo Group Limited is seeking a General Maintenance Operative on a fixed-term basis from November 2026 to March 2027 (potential extension up to 12 months) to prepare homes for new customers in Sunderland. You will join the Empty Homes team, performing general construction and maintenance duties and supporting trades to ensure a positive customer experience.

The role offers a 36-hour week (Mon–Fri) with an early finish on Fridays, a Great Place to Work award, and flexible/hybrid working

Qualifications

• Full UK driving licence required.
• Experience or transferable skills in construction, maintenance or labouring.
• Flexible and reliable approach to meet service demands.
• Ability to work at height and outdoors in varying conditions.
• Confidence using handheld IT systems.
• Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements or willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

• Carry out general construction and maintenance labouring duties
• Support trade colleagues with repairs (gutter clearing, pointing, window mastic)
• Remove furniture, waste and debris from homes, sites, and communal areas
• Undertake damp and mould treatments and warmer wall applications
• Install loft insulation replacements and top-ups
• Deliver excellent customer service through clear, respectful communication
• Respond to property damage and spillages/flood-related debris
• Drive, collect and deliver materials to support team operations
