Serco Limited is hiring a Mechanical Engineer for the HMP Dovegate site. The role focuses on maintaining critical gas and mechanical systems to ensure safety, compliance and reliable operations within a secure establishment.

The ideal candidate has a mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent, Gas Safe registration, and a proactive, independent work style with strong communication. DBS checks are required and training for additional qualifications may be offered.

Qualifications

• Recognised mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent trade-based qualification.
• Gas Safe registration desirable for commercial and domestic systems.
• Willingness to undertake AP training if not already qualified.

Responsabilités

• Carry out routine mechanical engineering work, planned maintenance, repairs and testing of gas systems.
• Diagnose faults and rectify defects on plant and equipment across the site.
• Install new mechanical plant and equipment according to specs and standards.
• Maintain schedules and keep compliance records up to date.
• Support a multi-skilled facilities management team and escort contractors when needed.
• Work safely, following statutory requirements and local regulations.

£38,814 per annum + £160 p/w on call allowance + excellent benefits

What you’ll do as a Mechanical Engineer

You’ll be entrusted to:

• - Carry out routine mechanical engineering work, planned preventative maintenance, repairs, and testing of gas systems
• - Diagnose faults and complete defect rectification on plant and equipment across the site
• - Install new mechanical plant and equipment in line with specifications and standards
• - Ensure maintenance schedules and compliance records are kept up to date
• - Support a multi-skilled facilities management team, including escorting contractors when required
• - Work safely at all times, following statutory requirements, site procedures, and local regulations

• - A recognised mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent trade-based qualification (such as C and G or NVQ)
• - Gas Safe registration with experience in both commercial and domestic systems desirable
• - The ability to work independently, manage your workload, and meet tight timescales
• - Strong communication skills and a collaborative, customer-focused approach
• - A flexible, proactive mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement
• - Qualified as an Authorised Person (AP) or willing to undertake training and assessment to become an AP desirable

Vetting and checks:

An Enhanced DBS check is required for this role. This includes spent and unspent convictions, cautions, and any relevant information held by local police, in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and safeguarding requirements. You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire to allow us to provide any support needed for you to succeed in the role.
