Job summary

Serco Limited at HMP Dovegate is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to maintain critical gas and mechanical systems within a secure establishment, ensuring safety, reliability and compliance to support rehabilitation and wellbeing.

You will perform planned maintenance, diagnose faults, install new equipment, and maintain records, with emphasis on safety and collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team. The role offers a structured progression path and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

  • A recognised mechanical engineering apprenticeship or equivalent trade-based qualification (such as C and G or NVQ).
  • Gas Safe registration with experience in both commercial and domestic systems desirable.
  • Ability to work independently, manage workload and meet tight timescales.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, customer-focused approach.
  • Flexible, proactive mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Qualified as an Authorised Person (AP) or willing to undertake training and assessment to become an AP desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out routine mechanical engineering work, planned preventative maintenance, repairs, and testing of gas systems.
  • Diagnose faults and complete defect rectification on plant and equipment across the site.
  • Install new mechanical plant and equipment in line with specifications and standards.
  • Ensure maintenance schedules and compliance records are kept up to date.
  • Support a multi-skilled facilities management team, including escorting contractors when required.
  • Work safely at all times, following statutory requirements, site procedures, and local regulations.

£38,814 per annum + £160 p/w on call allowance + excellent benefits

As a Mechanical Engineer in our Facilities Management team, you'll play a vital role in keeping a secure establishment safe, compliant, and operating effectively. What you'll do as a Mechanical Engineer

You’ll be entrusted to:

Vetting and checks:

An Enhanced DBS check is required for this role. This includes spent and unspent convictions, cautions, and any relevant information held by local police, in accordance with the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and safeguarding requirements. You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire to allow us to provide any support needed for you to succeed in the role.
