Job summary

Saab UK is seeking a Flight Control Systems Engineer to develop and test safety-critical flight software for UAS/UAV platforms. You will use MATLAB/Simulink to generate control laws and data algorithms, verify via bespoke simulations, and deploy to target hardware for flight tests near the Bedfordshire facility.

You will contribute to requirements, SOPs and continuous improvement while collaborating in a multidisciplinary team and presenting testing results to stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Degree in aerospace engineering or similar.
• Understanding of aerodynamics and flight mechanics and their impact on flight control.
• Experience using MATLAB/Simulink to develop algorithms and control laws.
• Hands-on experience designing and commissioning control systems.
• Existing SC Clearance.
• Desirable: guidance, navigation and control for fixed/rotary wing.
• Knowledge of sensing systems and small UAS.
• Experience with MathWorks tools: Stateflow, Simulink Coder, Embedded Coder.
• Experience with data fusion and state estimation.
• Experience with embedded and real-time safety-critical systems.
• Knowledge of comms systems and git version control.
• Programming in C++, Java, Python.
• Experience with software quality standards (DO-178, ED-20x).

Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and test safety-critical flight software.
• Contribute to requirements definition and verification/validation.
• Use bespoke simulations to prove software before hardware deployment.
• Deploy software to target hardware and conduct real-world flight testing.
• Prepare reports and customer-facing presentations of testing results.
• Contribute to SOPs and continuous improvement of methods.
• Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team and communicate findings.
