Job summary

Suffolk County Council’s Fleet Team at Phoenix House, Ipswich, is seeking a Fleet Technician to maintain and repair a diverse fleet including light vehicles, HGVs, fire appliances and specialist equipment. You’ll diagnose faults, service vehicles and participate in a 24-hour emergency rota from the Phoenix House Workshops.

Candidates should have 3.5+ tonne vehicle experience, a City and Guilds/NVQ Level 3, a full UK driving licence (Cat C), and a willingness to join call-outs.

Qualifications

• Significant experience repairing commercial vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
• City and Guilds or NVQ Level 3 in vehicle maintenance and repair; apprenticeship advantageous.
• Full UK driving licence including Category C (Class 2).
• Willing to participate in the call-out rota and live within approx. one hour of Phoenix House.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical and diagnostic skills.

• Good understanding of safe working practices including working at height, lifting equipment, inspection pits and controlled substances.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service's fleet of light vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, fire appliances and specialist operational equipment.
• Carry out servicing and repairs; undertake major overhauls at Phoenix House or at fire stations as required.
• Diagnose faults using diagnostic skills and interpret wiring diagrams; work with CAN Bus systems where applicable.
• Contribute to a 24-hour emergency call-out service to maximise vehicle availability.
• Work within the Workshops Team to ensure fleet remains safe and reliable for frontline response.
