Job summary

Staffordshire County Council’s Fleetcare team is seeking a skilled Heavy Vehicle Mechanic to service and repair a diverse fleet, including HGVs, vans and plant. You will diagnose faults, maintain safety standards and support the 24/7 breakdown service for essential council operations.

The ideal candidate holds a Level 3 NVQ in Vehicle Maintenance or equivalent, with a Cat C licence and a commitment to progressing in Electric/Hybrid Vehicle repair as the fleet modernises.

Qualifications

• Recognised Level 3 NVQ in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent with practical workshop experience.
• Full driving licence with Category C entitlement; additional licences are advantageous but not essential.
• Willingness to work towards Level 3 Electric & Hybrid Vehicle System Repair as fleet modernises.
• Strong knowledge of diagnostics, MOT prep, engine/drivetrain, hydraulics, pneumatics and electrical systems.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet manufacturer specs and DVSA standards.

Responsibilities

• Carry out major repairs, servicing, inspections and preventative maintenance across diverse fleet including HGVs, cars, vans and plant.
• Prepare vehicles for MOT, plating and inspections, including presenting at test facilities and addressing defects.
• Diagnose and repair vehicle systems, including electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic components, tail lifts and AC systems.
• Support Winter Maintenance Service and participate in Snowflake operations and 24/7 breakdown support.
• Maintain accurate service/inspection/repair records in line with regulations and Fleetcare standards.
• Collaborate with colleagues and customers to keep frontline services operating safely across Staffordshire.

Skills

NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance
