Job summary

Irlam Associates are recruiting for an experienced Fleet & Driver Manager to join our Deeside operation. This hands-on role combines fleet maintenance oversight with driver performance and compliance within a busy logistics environment.

You'll lead a small team, manage training, inductions and appraisals, monitor KPIs, ensure drivers hours and tachographs compliance, investigate incidents, and drive cost efficiencies while upholding safety standards.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in a Fleet Manager, Driver Manager, Transport Manager or similar position within a transport or logistics environment.
• Strong understanding of HGV fleet maintenance and vehicle compliance.
• Good knowledge of Operator Licence requirements, drivers' hours regulations and tachograph legislation.
• Experience managing, supporting and developing HGV drivers.
• Ability to identify operational improvements and manage fleet-related costs.
• Strong communication, leadership and organisational skills.
• A proactive, hands-on approach to problem-solving.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced transport operation.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the maintenance and compliance of a fleet of HGVs, trailers, company vehicles and on-site machinery.
• Implement and manage proactive and preventative vehicle maintenance schedules.
• Ensure continued compliance with Operator Licence requirements and relevant transport legislation.
• Monitor daily vehicle defect reporting and ensure all necessary repairs are completed promptly.
• Manage fleet maintenance budgets, identify cost-saving opportunities and minimise vehicle downtime.
• Develop strong relationships with external maintenance providers and suppliers.
• Manage, support and develop a team of HGV drivers, ensuring high standards of performance and professionalism.
• Oversee driver recruitment, onboarding, inductions and ongoing training.
• Monitor driver performance, productivity and service levels, implementing improvements where necessary.
• Conduct driver reviews, appraisals, training sessions and toolbox talks.
• Manage driver holidays, absence and performance-related matters.
• Ensure compliance with drivers' hours regulations, tachograph requirements and company procedures.
• Investigate driving infringements, incidents and service failures, implementing corrective actions where required.
• Work closely with the wider management team to maintain efficient daily transport operations.
• Promote a positive health and safety culture across the driver workforce.
• Investigate accidents, near misses and operational incidents.
• Monitor operational KPIs, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
• Maintain high levels of driver engagement, wellbeing and team performance.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives across fleet and transport operations.
