TeacherActive is recruiting an experienced Family Support Worker for our Children’s Centre service in Birmingham. The role involves direct work with children aged 0–19 with SEND and close collaboration with parents, carers, schools and health professionals.

You will deliver Stay and Play, parent support sessions and practical emotional support to families. We value safeguarding, relationship-building and cross-agency teamwork.

Qualifications

  • Candidate requirements include experience as a Family Support Worker or similar role.
  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEND.
  • Confidence engaging with parents and carers, including disadvantaged families.
  • Experience providing 1:1 and group-based support to families.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with families and professionals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with schools, health professionals and agencies.
  • Patient, empathetic and non-judgemental approach.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent is desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver Stay and Play sessions for children and families.
  • Support SEND short breaks and crèche provision.
  • Deliver parent and child support sessions.
  • Provide practical and emotional support to parents and carers.
  • Support children and young people during holiday play schemes and activities.
  • Work with disabled children, young people and siblings.
  • Provide individual and group-based interventions for families.
  • Support positive parenting programmes and family activities.
  • Help families work towards outcomes with appropriate plans.
  • Build positive relationships with families and identify areas of support.
  • Collaborate with health colleagues, schools, nurseries and agencies.
  • Maintain accurate records per policies and procedures.
  • Ensure safeguarding, regulatory and organisational requirements are met.

Location: Birmingham

Salary: £12.59 - £14.59 (per hour)

Start Date: ASAP

Contract Type: Temporary

Hours: 9am - 4pm

Introduction to the role

TeacherActive is currently recruiting for an experienced and compassionate Family Support Worker to support a welcoming and inclusive Children’s Centre service working with children, young people and their families.

The service supports children and young people aged 0–19 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and works closely with parents, carers, health professionals, schools, nurseries and other partner agencies.

This is a varied and rewarding position involving direct work with children and young people alongside wider family and parent support. The successful candidate will ideally have experience within family support, children’s services or SEND and be confident building positive relationships with families from a range of backgrounds.

Experience across different age groups would be particularly beneficial, although candidates do not need to have worked across the full 0–19 age range.

Candidate Requirements
  • Previous experience working as a Family Support Worker, Children’s Support Worker or in a similar role.
  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEND.
  • Confidence working directly with parents and carers, including families experiencing disadvantage or additional challenges.
  • Experience providing 1:1 and group-based support to children, young people or families.
  • An understanding of safeguarding and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries.
  • The ability to build positive and trusting relationships with children, young people and their families.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work effectively alongside schools, nurseries, health professionals and other agencies.
  • A patient, empathetic and non-judgemental approach.
  • An NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification is desirable but not essential.
Key Responsibilities

  • Maintaining accurate records in line with organisational policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring all support is delivered in accordance with safeguarding, regulatory and organisational requirements.
Compliance Requirements
  • Two professional references from recent employers.
  • An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service.
  • If you do not currently hold a suitable DBS, willingness to obtain a new Enhanced DBS through TeacherActive.
  • Evidence of your Right to Work in the UK.
