Education Authority in Northern Ireland is seeking an on-site cleaner/handyperson to provide cleaning and non-cleaning services under supervision. The role includes security tasks, routine maintenance, and assisting with the administration of premises operations.

The post involves planning and supervising cleaning activities, coordinating with managers, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. Training and elections duties may apply as required.

Responsibilities

• Security: secure premises and contents; open/close doors and gates as directed.
• Lock doors/gates and safeguard keys; return keys daily.
• Operate and monitor security cameras and alarms; report faults.
• Respond to after-hours incidents and secure premises when clearance is given.
• Report suspicious activity to the designated line manager.
• Apply grit/rock salt to pathways in snow and frost.
• Mechanical and Electrical: ensure boiler/heating operates efficiently and energy use is controlled.
• Light and heat premises; monitor plant in school meals areas.
• Ensure fuel is requisitioned in time and monitor consumption.
• Replace lamps and plugs up to 3.35m; inspect firefighting equipment and report faults.
• Clean: perform cleaning across premises except school meals areas.
• Plan, organise and control the work of cleaning staff where appropriate.
• Plan periodic work with service users and report plans to the line manager.
• Suggest changes to procedures to improve efficiency and economy.
• Monitor materials and equipment suitability; keep surfaces and grounds clean.
• Maintain drains and kitchen traps up to 3.35m; wash bins daily.
• Provide ongoing cleaning for spills, floods, toilets, and weather-related issues.
• Replenish toilet rolls, soap, towels throughout the day.
• Inspect sandpits daily and manage sand/paddling pools as required.
• Direct and clean fixed glass surfaces up to 3.35m; ensure PPE usage.
• Ensure cleaning standards meet board standards and address complaints.
• Porterage: receive and transport stores, meals and related materials.
• Despatch laundry and other materials; assist with room setups as needed.
• Transport refuse bins to collection points; prepare rooms for examinations.
• Administration: prepare reports on cleaning and premises defects; manage outside contractors as authorised.
• Complete required paperwork and maintain stock inventories.
• Keep records of staff attendance and holidays up to date.
• Handyperson duties: carry out tasks within the post-holder’s competence.
