Job summary

The University of Sussex is seeking a Duty Manager to oversee safe, efficient, and customer-focused facilities operations during scheduled shifts on campus. You will supervise frontline staff, monitor bookings, and ensure health and safety standards are met.

This onsite role requires working across two sites on a three-week rota, with overtime paid where required. A background in sports/recreation and First Aid (induction) are essential, plus a professional uniform.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1-2 years' experience in a similar setting (sports/recreation).
• Experience in a customer service environment.
• First Aid at work qualification (to be obtained during induction).
• Interest in sport, health and fitness.
• Willingness to wear appropriate uniform.
• Ability to work unsocial hours and paid overtime where required.
• Duty managers will be expected to work across two sites on a three-week rota basis.

Responsibilities

• Take full responsibility for day-to-day operational management during assigned shifts.
• Ensure facilities, equipment, and spaces are set up and ready for use.
• Monitor programme delivery and ensure quality and timeliness.
• Act as primary contact for operational issues, incidents, or emergencies.
• Carry out regular inspections to ensure cleanliness, safety, and functionality.
• Identify and report maintenance issues promptly and take action when required.
• Ensure adherence to opening/closing procedures and security protocols.
• Supervise frontline staff and allocate tasks during shifts.
• Deliver excellent customer service and maintain an inclusive environment.
