Job summary

Wimbledon High School is seeking an Estates Operative to maintain buildings and grounds, respond to maintenance needs, and ensure a safe, well-run environment for students, staff and visitors. You will work as part of our Estates team to keep the site in top condition and support a busy school day.

You may complete minor repairs, assist with furniture moves and room setups for events, conduct site checks, and help coordinate contractors while prioritising safety and efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Experience in caretaking, facilities, premises or general maintenance.
  • Hands-on DIY ability with practical repairs such as painting, carpentry or basic plumbing.
  • Strong awareness of health and safety and emergency procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out minor DIY repairs and general building maintenance.
  • Help with furniture moves, deliveries, room set-ups and school events.
  • Keep the site tidy and support security patrols, inspections and compliance checks.
  • Support contractors and help ensure their work is carried out safely.
  • Play an active part in fire safety, first aid and wider emergency arrangements.
  • Support the smooth day-to-day operation of the school site.

Job description

Wimbledon High School is looking for a hands-on, proactive person who takes pride in their work and enjoys being part of a busy, supportive team. As an Estates Operative at Wimbledon High School, you will make a visible difference every day. Working as part of our friendly and supportive Estates team, you will help care for our buildings and grounds, respond to maintenance needs and ensure that students, colleagues and visitors enjoy a safe, secure and well-run environment. No two days will be the same. You might be completing a minor repair, preparing spaces for a school event, carrying out site checks, supporting a delivery or helping to resolve an issue before it disrupts the school day. You will be trusted to use your initiative, work collaboratively and take pride in getting things done well.

What you will bring
  • Practical DIY or handyperson skills, with experience of general repairs such as painting, carpentry or basic plumbing

  • The physical ability to lift and carry furniture, equipment and deliveries
  • Good organisation and the ability to manage your time effectively
  • Confidence using your own initiative and knowing when to elevate an issue

  • A willingness to undertake training and occasionally support events outside normal working hours
