Job description
Equine Veterinary Surgeon - Royston
  • Highly successful, independent equine veterinary practice in a stunning rural location
  • Extensive facilities with a full range of modern diagnostic equipment, including an objective gait analysis system
  • Purpose-built clinic with 5 stables, surgical suite, treatment room with stocks, and dedicated areas for lameness assessments
  • Excellent scope for career progression and even the possibility of ownership in the future
  • Fantastic benefits package, including excellent salary of up to £65,000 DOE

A long-established, independent equine-only practice with over 25 years of experience, based near Royston in North Hertfordshire, is seeking a friendly and experienced equine vet to join their busy but supportive team of 5.5 FTE vets, 2 RVNs, and 4 admin staff. Could this be the perfect opportunity for you?

They offer a comprehensive ambulatory service with mobile diagnostic equipment alongside their purpose-built clinic, which houses five stables, a surgical suite, a treatment room with stocks, and facilities for lameness assessment. We are also equipped with a full range of modern diagnostic tools, including an objective gait analysis system, allowing them to provide a full range of at-the-yard and clinic-based services to a loyal and longstanding client base.

The Role

This role is integral to the practice, providing routine, advanced, and emergency services alongside senior and associate veterinary surgeons. You will see a diverse caseload including leisure horses, sports horses, thoroughbreds, and the occasional donkey.

As an independent practice with extensive facilities, our vets enjoy the freedom to work up cases fully, refer externally when appropriate, or collaborate within the team. The caseload is varied and interesting, offering scope to develop specific areas of clinical interest. There are also opportunities to mentor junior vets and nurses, as well as to develop leadership skills, with the potential to progress towards a clinical director role and even future ownership opportunities.

We are seeking an experienced equine vet who is:

  • Skilled in all areas of first opinion and ambulatory clinical work
  • Confident in areas such as lameness/poor performance work‑ups, internal medicine, dentistry, anaesthesia, and pre‑purchase examinations (a mix of these is ideal)
  • Able to provide empathetic communication with both clients and colleagues
  • Collaborative and proactive within a close‑knit team
  • Experienced in stud work (advantageous but not essential)
The Package
  • Salary up to £65,000 pro‑ratio (DOE)
  • Full‑time or part‑time position available
  • 1:5 out‑of‑hours rota
  • Pension scheme
  • 22 days holiday plus Bank Holidays (pro‑ratio)
  • Private healthcare
  • RCVS & BEVA membership plus CPD allowance
  • Confidence/mental health coaching available
  • Visa sponsorship available to the right candidate
  • Beautiful rural location with good transport links
  • Fun, sociable, and dog‑friendly workplace
