We are offering an exciting opportunity to join the Fleet & Depots team as Environmental Specialist. This role primarily focuses on Carbon Emissions, Waste Management, Air Quality, Noise and Vibration, and Pollution Control. Reporting to the Product Lead of the IS Sustainable Development Strategy (also known as Head of HS Fleet Technical), you will collaborate with a dedicated team to create, research, and deliver a Sustainability Strategy and Roadmap for West Coast Partnership Development (WCPD).

You will support integrating the rail industry’s Sustainable Rail Blueprint within this strategy and provide expertise in carbon and natural environmental matters to the WCPD Integrated Services Sustainable Development Strategy.

Typical Projects Will Include:

  1. Building a Carbon Baseline including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
  2. Developing a Waste Management Process, utilizing data to map waste journeys, estimate volumes, and ensure compliance.
  3. Supporting the development of an Air Quality Improvement Plan, using data from key locations and RSSB guidance.
  4. Supporting the Noise and Vibration Action Plan, analyzing data from modeling activities and assessing impacts on communities.
  5. Collaborating with stakeholders to understand biodiversity impacts and develop relevant plans.
  6. Collecting and analyzing data on climate change events within the rail industry to predict impacts on WCPD operations, working with researchers and academics.
  7. Managing water resources effectively in collaboration with designers and operations teams to ensure pollution control legislation compliance.

The role requires working within cross-functional teams, leading initiatives where appropriate, and building a network of contacts across WCPD and stakeholders to inform the Sustainability Strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leading sustainability workshops, conducting Gap Analyses and Materiality Assessments on natural environment topics.
  2. Providing consultancy on natural environment topics, including decarbonisation, noise and air quality strategies, water and waste management, and external reporting.
  3. Seeking collaborative relationships to strengthen the development of the Sustainability Strategy.
  4. Developing key reports for updates to the Department for Transport on project progress and findings.
  5. Supporting the Group’s Vision, Strategy, and Values.
  6. Adhering to safety policies and embodying the principles of the Be Safe programme.
  7. Maintaining knowledge of the Group’s objectives and business plans.
