Job summary

Cornwall Council is seeking an Environmental Health Officer or Private Sector Housing Officer to help improve housing conditions and protect residents across Cornwall. You will manage a varied caseload, inspect properties for hazards, and take appropriate enforcement action in partnership with landlords and agents.

As the service adapts to the Renters Rights Act, you will develop approaches, broaden your expertise, and contribute to a forward-looking team delivering meaningful outcomes for

Qualifications

• Recognised Environmental Health qualification or relevant housing/regulatory experience.
• Experience or knowledge of housing standards, private rented sector work or HMO licensing.
• Understanding of key legislation (Housing Act 2004) or ability to develop this quickly.
• Strong inspection, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Understanding of enforcement process and Renters Rights Act duties.
• Ability to manage a varied caseload and work independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication skills with confidence engaging tenants, landlords and partners.
• A proactive, adaptable approach and willingness to learn.
• Full UK driving licence (or ability to travel across Cornwall).

Responsibilities

• Respond to service requests from tenants in the private rented sector and inspect properties to identify hazards.
• Take appropriate enforcement action and support compliance through advice and engagement with landlords and agents.
• Contribute to developing approaches as the Renters Rights Act expands the service and broaden expertise.
• Work as part of a forward-looking team delivering meaningful outcomes for communities across Cornwall.
