Job Title – Environmental Engineer
Location – Barrow, Cumbria
Job Type – 6 months contract
Principal Accountabilities
- Lead the implementation of process and management system opportunities across the site to ensure continued legislative compliance and to exceed performance standards, aligning business strategy.
- Be responsive to Corporate and EU/UK Law and other EHS requirements.
- Maintain and improve Client’s Barrow Environmental Management System to corporate and internationally certified standards.
- Ensure all critical legal and Corporate reporting requirements are delivered.
- Collaborate with the Environment Agency and other authorities to ensure permit conditions are agreed and complied with.
- Influence process design and development in environmental management across the UK Mills.
- Provide reactive and proactive EHS support to Barrow Mill.
- Support collection of monitoring data.
2. Process Development
- Understand capabilities and limitations of existing process designs. Identify and prioritise opportunities for improvement in Asset efficiency.
- Work closely with fellow Environmental specialists across the UK, IFP and Global to ensure common learnings are captured and shared; and that Client’s requirements are understood and applied consistently.
- Subject Mater Expert for all environmental matters ensuring sMOC processes are correctly applied in areas of responsibility.
- Directs and advise Managers and Senior Engineers on legislative environment requirements and how these impact on the Assets.
3. Project Support
- Guide and advise Managers and Senior Engineers on new plant and equipment design to ensure Environmental best practice is applied.
- Provide technical plant leadership in development, co-ordination and evaluation of environmental impacts; ensuring consultation and alignment with competent authorities around licence and permit conditions.
4. Process Health Management for Waste Water Treatment
- Oversee, Facilitate, Advise and Support effluent plant operations, ensuring that operations are sustained and improved.
- Provide technical guidance in the development and implementation of robust operational practices.
- Document and maintain process controls parameters such as good run settings and control charts – Centre lining.
- Support collection of monitoring data.
- Ensure that results remain within our environmental consent and allows maximum benefit of recycling effluent water back to the mill to allow fresh water reduction.
- Ensure management requirements for the self-management of flow (Mcert) are maintained and support verification activities.
- Management of Client’s Duty of Care for all waste arising.
- Oversee IFM Contactors management of our waste streams ensuring legal and Client’s requirements are met.
6. Emissions to Air, Land and Water
- Ensure all legal management requirements relating to emissions to air (Mcert) are compliant and support verification activities.
- Work through the CPI to ensure compliance with European Emissions Trading Scheme (EUETS); responding to changes in the various phases.
- Ensure all legal requirements relating to water abstraction licences are compliant with permit conditions.
- Support the management of Radiation sources on site; working closely with RPA and Safety Leader to ensure best practice is achieved and permit conditions are met.
Nature & Scope:
Reporting to the Barrow Mill EHS Manager and responsible for all environment systems and supporting activities within the facility. The Barrow Mill is a member of the UK cluster and is Europe’s biggest tissue facility.
The role objectives are aimed at:
- Ensuring the Mill has appropriate systems and activities to support the facility and sector achieving their environmental objectives and legal compliance.
- Continued compliance to the Environment Agency’s permits is essential for continued mill operation.
Qualifications & Experience:
The Environmental Manager should hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in an Environmental discipline; or other Bachelor of Science Degree supported by a Diploma in Environmental Management.
The Environmental Manager must have a minimum of 5 relevant years of experience in:
- Working at an Environment Agency Permitted facility
- Waste Water Treatment and Management
