About this job

Environmental Enforcement Technical Officers undertake duties such as proactive and reactive patrols, responding to service requests or tasks as directed by the management team.

The post holder is responsible for equipment including digital recording body-worn cameras, council vehicles, mobile devices, and personal protective equipment required for the role.

They support a team responsible for inspecting and monitoring public and private spaces within the borough to improve the street scene and environment.

Responsibilities include delivering enforcement activities such as high visibility patrols, targeting offences related to commercial waste, littering, fly-tipping, noise, highways enforcement, street trading, fly posting, graffiti, unauthorised advertising, unlawful encampments, abandoned vehicles, overgrown gardens, detrimental land, dog fouling, and other issues affecting public spaces.

Special requirements for this post

The role involves investigating environmental issues reported on public and private land, including handling inquiries, complaints, and enforcement actions such as issuing notices and fixed penalty notices.

Assist with investigating complaints related to noise and statutory nuisances under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Provide support to the Stray Dog service, including caring for dogs, and assist in duties related to stray dogs, dog control, and dog fouling issues.

Work jointly with police and partners to gather intelligence and plan enforcement activities.

Contribute to operational rotas, including out-of-hours, weekend, evening, and night shifts.

Adhere to uniform and PPE requirements, following risk assessments for high visibility clothing.

This role offers the opportunity to make a difference in residents' and businesses' lives within Barking and Dagenham, involving investigation of offences, adherence to the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, conducting interviews, and serving notices.

You will become proficient in issuing fixed penalty notices for environmental offences such as littering, fly-tipping, and noise.

The role involves engaging with individuals, overcoming challenges, and working across various council departments including legal, trading standards, licensing, and housing.

A full driving license and excellent communication skills are required.
