To provide a professional environment and sustainability advice and support to enable TRU to manage environmental and sustainability risks and opportunities, thereby improving performance. This includes managing relevant assurance and governance processes and supporting the Head of Sustainability in managing and implementing environment and sustainability improvement programmes.

Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a passionate individual to join the Sustainability Programme Team, contributing to the TRU Sustainable Development Strategy ‘Our Guiding Compass’ and enhancing environmental delivery and performance across a complex structure. The ideal candidate will be confident, proactive, and eager to make a meaningful impact. Given TRU's fast-paced, major programme environment, the candidate should possess experience and skills suited to such a dynamic setting.

  • Experience providing environmental and sustainability advice for significant infrastructure projects.
  • Extensive construction project delivery experience to ensure immediate contribution.
  • Confidence in raising concerns about environmental and sustainability performance and leading solutions.
  • Experience managing environmental performance, driving solutions, and achieving positive change.
  • Strong attention to detail for accurate and consistent reporting.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

  • Collaborative and supportive team-oriented approach.

About the Role (External)

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide expert technical advice on environmental management and sustainability to stakeholders, integrating requirements into business processes.
  2. Implement environment and sustainability strategies and plans, collaborating across business areas and supply chains.
  3. Work with project teams to develop practical measures to enhance environmental and sustainability performance, sharing lessons learned.
  4. Manage governance frameworks ensuring risk-based assurance and continuous improvement.
  5. Maintain relationships with stakeholders, regulatory bodies, NGOs, and other agencies, supporting collaboration and strategy alignment.
  6. Oversee environment and sustainability training and competency development for staff.
  7. Create and disseminate internal and external communications on environmental and sustainability topics.
  8. Foster a culture of environmental and sustainability excellence within the organization.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Membership of IEMA or equivalent (e.g., CIEEM), or relevant experience.
  • Degree-level qualification (minimum UK level 6) in environment, sustainability, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Significant experience managing environmental and sustainability issues within construction projects.
  • Deep understanding of environmental and sustainability legislation.
  • Proven track record of implementing successful environmental improvements.
  • Experience working with management systems like ISO standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience delivering Network Rail's Environment and Social Minimum Requirements Standard.
  • Full Chartered Member of IEMA or equivalent.
