Job summary

Legal & General is seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to lead an engineering team and stay hands-on in delivering modern software solutions. You’ll collaborate with engineering, product, architecture and business stakeholders to create secure, scalable and reliable technology that drives customer value and supports our business ambitions.

You will guide delivery, coach engineers, and foster a culture of quality, testing and security, while balancing technical excellence with delivery

Qualifications

• Significant hands-on Java engineering experience, including building and operating Spring Boot microservices.
• Strong understanding of modern software architecture principles, including domain‑driven and event‑driven design.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams and developing people through coaching and mentoring.
• Excellent knowledge of test‑driven development, quality engineering practices and automated testing approaches.
• Experience working with CI/CD practices, modern version control workflows and software delivery pipelines.
• Strong understanding of secure software development, operational readiness and observability practices.

Responsibilities

• Lead and develop a team of engineers to deliver high-quality, secure and reliable software solutions.
• Prioritising, planning and overseeing delivery activities to achieve predictable and effective outcomes.
• Designing and building scalable, maintainable software while remaining an active hands-on engineer.
• Coaching, mentoring and supporting engineers through feedback and structured development plans.
• Embedding a culture of quality, testing and security across day-to-day engineering practices.
• Driving continuous improvement through delivery metrics, operational insights and observability data.
• Managing operational readiness, incident response processes and technical debt to maintain resilient systems.
• Collaborating with product, architecture and business stakeholders to remove blockers and deliver customer value.
