Job summary

Role Description

The Engineering Assessor is a full-time post, responsible for assessing engineering apprentices and learners in line with awarding body and college standards. Day-to-day tasks include planning and conducting workplace visits, observing practical skills, reviewing portfolios, and verifying evidence against competency frameworks in engineering disciplines. The role involves providing constructive feedback, coaching learners to meet performance and safety standards, and supporting them in developing technical knowledge and professional behaviors. The Engineering Assessor will liaise with employers, tutors, and internal quality assurance teams to ensure accurate progress tracking, timely completion of assessments, and compliance with regulatory and health and safety requirements. Additional responsibilities include maintaining up-to-date assessment records, contributing to continuous improvement in assessment practice, and participating in standardization meetings and professional development activities.


Qualifications


  • Strong engineering knowledge and practical experience in relevant disciplines (e.g., mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, or maintenance engineering).

  • Assessment and verification skills, including familiarity with competency-based assessment, portfolio review, and awarding body requirements.

  • Ability to provide clear, structured feedback, coach learners, and support diverse learning needs in vocational and technical settings.

  • Excellent communication, organization, and record-keeping skills to manage caseloads, documentation, and reporting effectively.

  • Relevant engineering qualification (e.g., Level 3 or higher in an engineering field) and, ideally, an assessor qualification (such as TAQA, A1, or equivalent).

  • Understanding of health and safety regulations, industry standards, and safeguarding practices within educational and workplace environments.

  • Experience working with apprentices, employers, or training providers is highly beneficial.
