Historic England have a fantastic opportunity for you to join us as an Emerging Talent Trainee Placement - Research Project Assistant.

This is a part-time paid Emerging Talent Programme placement – for up to 8 weeks for 1 to 2 days per week – details to be confirmed at the time of appointment. You will be paid a £454 per week bursary (pro rata for part-time). We offer hybrid working where you are based in the Bristol office and from home.

Our training placements are for young people aged 18 to 30 years old across three audiences:

Black, Asian, or ethnic minorities

Disabled people

People who are disadvantaged by their social and/or economic background or circumstances

Purpose of the Placement

The placement will support the Heritage at Risk Project Officers in the South West Partnerships Team to look at heritage at risk through coastal erosion and sharing their ideas on how sites can be made more accessible to young people.

What you will be doing

Undertaking shadowing of Heritage at Risk Project Officers in the office and through virtual meetings to understand the context of the issues and then completing some site and desk based research including:

Working with the Heritage at Risk Project Officer (HAR PO) for Cornwall and the regional Stakeholder Engagement Advisor to undertake research into buildings affected by coastal erosion on the Heritage At Risk register, identifying where there may be relevant local community interest. The successful applicant will be trained to use Arc GIS mapping.

Given shadowing opportunities, attending broader team and group meetings to gain a sense of the variety of career opportunities available. The applicant will be encouraged to identify barriers and give feedback on the career pathways and opportunities available.

Undertaking site visits with the HAR PO, and give their thoughts on the accessibility of these sites and how they could be better interpreted/used by young people.

Working with the Stakeholder Engagement Adviser to explore a variety of ways sharing the information and data sets so that other regional team members know how and where to access the information to inform their work

Events and meetings

We will be hosting a Welcome Event for all Emerging Talent Placements in our London office on 24 July 2025.

1-2 meeting per week with Heritage at Risk Project Officers plus some site visits TBC.

Our placements will enable you to gain valuable hands-on experience of working in the heritage sector, developing skills to enable you to take the next steps in your career.

Once you have completed your Emerging Talent Placement you will be eligible to apply for a 6 month Step-Up placement. These are paid training roles, based within a team for six months full time (part time will be considered). They are specifically targeted for people who have undertaken one of our Emerging Talent Placements over the summer, either this year, or in a previous year.

These placements are designed to give you that “step up” into a longer paid work in the heritage sector.

They will also help you develop your essential skills, improving your employability.
