Job description

Electricity Distribution - Network Technician

Opportunities are available for two Technicians based at our Alfreton depot.

You will be accountable to the Team Manager for the construction, maintenance, and repair of the underground and overhead network up to 66kV. Additionally, you will be responsible for programming and monitoring immediate work colleagues, switching up to 66kV, issuing appropriate safety documentation, and performing other tasks relevant to the Technician role.

You are required to have grade A*-C/4-9 GCSE in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in both subjects. Furthermore, you must hold a City & Guilds 2339 Level 2 or an equivalent Level 2 qualification in Electrical Engineering.

Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.

*Depending on experience, you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are completed.

Main Responsibilities
  • Network operations including issuing Limitations of Access and Permit to Work safety documents up to 66kV
  • Construction of distribution substations, construction, and alteration of overhead lines and associated plant. Installation of plant. Laying and jointing of cables up to 11kV.
  • Repair and replacement of faulty and obsolete plant, cables, and overhead lines.
  • Recording asset routes, details, and positions.
Ideal Candidate

You must be able to work on your own initiative as part of a small team and be capable of making on-the-spot decisions as required. Good communication skills, a flexible attitude, and the ability to cope in pressured situations often working to tight deadlines are essential. Additionally, you will be required to undertake SAP training and be mobile throughout the area to undertake standby duties as part of the formal rota.

If not already attained, the successful candidate will be required to undertake a Level 3 City & Guilds 2339 qualification.

National Grid Electricity Distribution is committed to safeguarding the interests of the Company, colleagues, and customers. This role is subject to a satisfactory DBS check, with varying levels of screening depending on the role. Some roles require triannual checks.
