Job summary

EDF (UK) is seeking an EC&I Engineer to join the Design Engineering Group at Torness Power Station. This full-time, site-based role focuses on delivering high-quality engineering solutions and safety justifications for a UK nuclear licensed site.

You will apply expertise across design engineering, safety case, and regulatory activities to support safe, reliable plant operation and compliance with industry standards.

Qualifications

• Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical, Electronic or related discipline.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver engineering design solutions for electrical, control and instrumentation systems.
• Produce and review Engineering Changes (ECs) and supporting technical documentation.
• Undertake deterministic safety assessments and technical evaluations to support plant modifications.
• Contribute to hazard identification and hazard analysis activities, including nuclear and conventional safety assessments.
• Develop regulatory justifications and supporting submissions demonstrating compliance with nuclear safety requirements.
• Assess the impact of plant modifications on existing safety cases and engineering documentation.
• Support design reviews, verification activities, and implementation programmes.
• Liaise with operations, maintenance, safety case, commissioning and project teams to ensure successful delivery of engineering solutions.
• Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable legislation, licence conditions, company standards and nuclear industry best practice.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated and capable Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineer to join our Design Engineering Group, within the Engineering Department at Torness Power Station. This is a full‑time, site‑based position and is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the safe, reliable and efficient operation of a UK nuclear licensed site through the delivery of high‑quality engineering solutions and safety justifications.

The role is ideally suited to engineers from a Design Engineering, Safety Case, or related technical background who are looking to apply their expertise across a diverse range of engineering, nuclear safety and regulatory activities.

Pay, Benefits And Culture

The salary range associated with this role is between £47,513 to £99,929 however; the starting salary will be within the range of £47,513 to £84,595 allowing room for career advancement. You’ll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. What You’ll Be Doing

As an EC&I Engineer, you will support the development and implementation of engineering modifications and technical solutions across station systems. The role combines engineering design activities with nuclear safety assessment and regulatory justification, ensuring that modifications are delivered in accordance with site licence conditions and relevant industry standards.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, operations personnel, independent nuclear assurance, and external regulators to ensure the continued safe operation of the power station.

Who You Are

We welcome applications from engineers with experience in either engineering design, nuclear safety case development, or related technical disciplines. Experience in a technical, industrial, manufacturing, energy, defence, rail, aviation, or petrochemical environment would be valuable. You’ll bring strong problem‑solving skills, a methodical and analytical mindset, and the ability to communicate clearly with both technical and non‑technical audiences.

You should have:

• A degree (or equivalent qualification, HNC/HND will be considered) in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Control & Instrumentation Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Experience in engineering design, safety case production, safety assessment, or technical justification activities.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Experience authoring or reviewing technical documentation.
• The ability to communicate complex engineering and safety concepts clearly to a range of stakeholders.
• An understanding of hazard identification, risk assessment and safety management principles.
• The role is based on an industrial site, and as such, the applicant requires the capability to potentially work in areas utilising stairways, vertical ladders, working at height solutions or in confined spaces.

Desirable Experience

• Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:
• Nuclear industry experience.
• Safety case development and maintenance.
• Hazard studies (HAZOP, HAZID, fault studies or equivalent).
• Engineering Change processes.
• Electrical power systems, protection systems, control systems or instrumentation systems.
• Regulatory engagement and justification activities.
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or progress towards professional registration.

To be appointed to this role, you will need to meet the criteria for Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) which will, ordinarily, require you to have British residency for the last 3 years.
