Job description

The University of Southampton’s Department of Economics invites applications for a Professorship position. This recruitment follows the successful hiring in Autumn 2024 of two Lecturers, one Associate Professor, and two Professors, and forms part of a major expansion drive aimed at further strengthening our vibrant research, education, and knowledge exchange culture.

Research Focus and Achievements

Our department is renowned for impactful research in the economics of migration, networks, education, crime, and inequality. We are also leaders in developing and applying cutting-edge macroeconomic, experimental, and econometric methods. The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) rated 100% of our research environment and impact initiatives, and 93% of our research outputs as internationally excellent or above. We have a strong record of securing prestigious grants from sources such as the ESRC, Horizon 2020, and Norface. Our department contributes to large-scale funding initiatives like the ESRC Centre for Population Change and ESRC Connecting Generations, both housed within the School of Economic, Social, and Political Sciences.

Institutional Context and Priorities

The University of Southampton is ranked among the world’s top 100 and is one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive institutions. Building on our success, the University is focusing on four thematic areas: AI and Data Science, Sustainability and Resilience, Decarbonisation, and Engineering Better Health. In line with these themes, the Department of Economics prioritizes applications from scholars with expertise in applied economics (including migration, industrial organization, labour, environmental, and health economics), microeconometrics, financial econometrics, and data science.

Candidate Profile and Expectations

All candidates should have an established reputation in Economics, demonstrated through publications in leading journals and research with significant academic and societal impact. Candidates should show leadership, a strong reputation in their sub-field, and a proven track record of securing research grants. The role involves contributing to the Department’s educational mission by designing and delivering innovative, research-led teaching. We encourage applicants committed to conducting cutting-edge research, engaging with our academic community, and fostering an inclusive, supportive environment.

Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

The School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment. Our recent achievements include the renewal of our Athena SWAN Bronze award and the Race Equality Charter Bronze award, reflecting our efforts to promote gender and race equality. We value diversity and support policies that enhance career progression, mentorship, flexible working, and a collegial workplace culture.

Application Details

Successful candidates are expected to start in September 2025, with some flexibility. Interviews will be held on 22nd and 23rd July 2025. Applications should include details for 3 referees, a CV, publication list, and a sample of your best published research.
