Job Purpose

The Service Reservoir Technician role is a key role which will report to the Service Reservoir Team Leader within Water Services – Cheshire County Business area. The role has been developed to allow the water network department to provide an efficient and effective Service Reservoir cleaning and inspection service against its strategic targets and delivery. This role will be pivotal in helping United Utilities water network achieve its target position of frontier status.

The role holders will be seen as the compliance champion for water storage assets and will be accountable for the delivery of a planned maintenance schedule as determined by effective operations and maintenance, proactive maintenance, or reactive maintenance as a result of a compliance failure for all of these assets.

Major activities include cleaning, disinfection, inspection, reporting and remedial activities to water storage assets as required, and to provide sampling and performance data collection.

To ensure all activities comply with Health and Safety Legislation, including confined space entry and dynamic risk assessment.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities
  • Perform thorough cleaning and disinfection of service reservoirs, contact tanks, and other water storage assets as required. This includes planned maintenance to optimise the availability of water storage facilities and reactive cleaning operations in response to specific needs.
  • Assess individual sites to identify the most appropriate cleaning methods based on asset conditions. Collaborate with field staff and inspection teams to plan and execute cleaning operations in line with agreed programmes and defined standards.
  • Conduct water sampling on completion of cleaning activities to ensure quality standards are met. Maintain accurate written records of sampling results, liaise with laboratories for test outcomes, and promptly communicate results to relevant site operators or asset owners.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all regulatory output standards, internal Key Performance Indicators, and operating plans. Perform comprehensive risk assessments, including confined space evaluations and gas checks, and follow Health & Safety regulations and internal company policies during all tasks.
  • Organise daily activities to maximise time efficiency and manage chemical and material inventories. Undertake minor remedial work and flood testing of assets, report identified risks or failures, and support the service reservoir team leader with any operational challenges. Additionally, ensure all required documentation is completed and budget targets are met.
Technical Skills & Experience

This role would be ideal for those people with more than three years operational experience in regulatory compliance. The ideal person will be able to demonstrate the competency to work as part of a high performance team whilst having a proven record of achieving goals, objectives and scorecard measures.

  • The Service Reservoir technician will be educated to a good standard – preferably GCSE grade C or above, City and Guilds, or able to demonstrate technical skills and competency in the cleaning and disinfection of water storage assets. They will be required to comply with all Health and Safety procedures and will be capable of operating all machinery, equipment and tools within a difficult working environment. Team working and communication skills will be an integral requirement of the role.
  • There will also be a dedicated training programme for the role that will allow the Service Reservoir Technician to work effectively in their role whilst delivering against our targets.
  • Health screening (annual) may be required for this role.
  • Whilst we have tried to highlight the key skills that will be required to undertake this role they are not all essential at the outset.
  • A willingness to undertake the necessary training would be expected and appropriate support and development will be offered.
