Director of Software Engineering

About this role

We are seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead a team of over 100 engineers. The ideal candidate is results-oriented, capable of partnering with business leaders, and able to engage with top-tier engineers on technical rigor.

You will oversee all technologists within our 'outcome teams' focused on driving business results. The role requires excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to switch seamlessly from executive-level discussions to deep technical dives and strategic planning. Providing clear guidance to navigate ambiguity is essential.

You will collaborate effectively with local business leadership and enterprise stakeholders, offering objective assessments of costs, risks, and strategic options.

What you'll do

  • Lead a team of 100+ technologists, including Software Engineers, Quality Engineers, and Architects, operating at scale within a regulated environment.
  • Partner with Product and Design teams on the product roadmap to achieve key business objectives.
  • Identify and develop talent, managing performance and fostering growth within the team.
  • Ensure effective, timely delivery across outcome teams.
  • Manage relationships with enterprise stakeholders, mainly in the US, with domain expertise.
  • Oversee a mix of internal and third-party engineers, ensuring effective management of external partners.
  • Align team efforts with organizational purpose, customer needs, and opportunities.
  • Stay informed on regulatory changes and enterprise processes.
  • Maintain awareness of current technologies and engineering best practices.
  • Participate actively in technical design reviews, promoting consistent engineering standards.
  • Support career development for team members.

What we're looking for

  • Proven experience leading large software engineering teams with high performance.
  • Ability to solve complex challenges across people, processes, and technology, with intellectual curiosity and comfort in ambiguity.
  • Excellent critical thinking and advisory skills for leadership.
  • Passion for recruiting and nurturing engineering talent.
  • Capability to deliver results individually while enabling team success through established patterns and practices.
  • Exceptional communication skills adaptable to diverse audiences.
  • Experience with AWS, including native developments.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity trends affecting engineering.
  • Ability to operate within enterprise policies while tailoring approaches for the UK context.
  • Pragmatic approach balancing short-term needs with long-term strategic goals.
  • Understanding of UK/US regulatory, consumer lending, and tech landscapes (preferred).

Where and how you'll work

This is a permanent role based at our London offices with a hybrid work model. You will work from the office three days a week: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
