Job summary

18 Week Support is seeking experienced Dermatology Surgical HCAs to support weekend insourcing clinics across dermatology services. You will join teams delivering NHS waiting list initiatives in busy outpatient settings, assisting clinicians and patients throughout their clinic journey.

Ideal candidates have hands-on dermatology theatre experience within the NHS, excellent communication, and a patient-focused approach.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience in supporting dermatology theatres within NHS settings.
• Active involvement in dermatology theatre work for at least 6 months in the past year.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills; patient-focused and detail-oriented.

Responsibilities

• Pre-operative assessment.
• Prepare for dermatological surgery.
• Intra-operative assistance for dermatology procedures.
• Assist the dermatologist or surgeon during skin biopsies, lesion excisions, curettage and cautery, punch biopsies, and minor skin cancer procedures.
• Maintain aseptic technique and a sterile field, handle instruments and specimens appropriately.
• Monitor patient status and provide reassurance during procedures.
• Specimen management and post-operative care.
• Documentation and clinical governance; ensure effective team working.

We are currently seeking experienced Dermatology Surgical Healthcare Assistants (HCAs) to support weekend insourcing clinics, helping deliver NHS waiting list initiatives across a range of dermatology services.

This is an excellent opportunity to join experienced teams delivering high‑quality patient care within busy outpatient settings, supporting clinicians and patients throughout their clinic journey.

Requirements

• Have recent, hands‑on experience supporting dermatology theatres
• Have been actively undertaking this work for at least 6 months within the past 12 months

You will also have:

• Experience working as a Healthcare Assistant within an NHS dermatology theatre setting
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• Organisational skills and attention to detail
• A patient‑focused approach with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team

Responsibilities include supporting with:

• Pre‑operative assessment
• Preparing for dermatological surgery
• Intra‑operative assistance
  • Assist the dermatologist, dermatological surgeon or other clinician during procedures such as:
    • Skin biopsies
    • Excision of skin lesions
    • Curettage and cautery
    • Punch biopsies
    • Minor skin cancer procedures
    • Mohs surgery, where applicable
  • Maintain aseptic technique and a safe sterile field.
  • Handle instruments and specimens appropriately.
  • Monitor the patient’s condition and provide reassurance throughout the procedure.
  • Recognise and respond promptly to complications
