Job summary

Portman Recruitment is seeking an energetic Deputy Manager for a children’s residential home in the UK. You will assist the Registered Manager in day-to-day operations, ensuring safe, person-centred care and compliance with Ofsted standards.

The role requires strong leadership, safeguarding knowledge, and the ability to support staff and young people across care plans, risk assessments, and professional meetings.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a children's residential home.
  • Experience as Deputy Manager, Senior Residential Support Worker or Team Leader in an Ofsted-regulated setting.
  • Strong safeguarding knowledge.
  • Experience contributing to care plans, risk assessments, reviews and professional meetings.
  • Ability to lead, motivate and support a residential care team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Registered Manager with the overall management and effective running of the home.
  • Deputise for the Registered Manager during periods of absence.
  • Help ensure high standards of care, safeguarding and support are maintained.
  • Support the implementation and review of young people's care plans and contribute to LAC reviews.
  • Promote positive outcomes for young people and support them to reach their full potential.
  • Assist with Ofsted inspections preparation, Regulation 33/34 visits and Local Authority compliance visits.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are implemented consistently.
  • Support staff supervision, appraisals, and learning and development.
  • Assist with staff performance, disciplinary matters and grievances.

Deputy Manager – Children's Residential Home

Salary: £34,000 - £40,500
Sleep-In Allowance: £50 per sleep-in, typically 6–10 sleep-ins per month
Hours: Full-time
Service: Children's Residential Care
Reporting to: Registered Manager

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and committed Deputy Manager to join a children's residential care team and support the Registered Manager in the day‑to‑day management of a high‑quality residential home.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring that young people receive safe, consistent and person‑centred care, while supporting staff to maintain excellent standards of practice.

You will work closely with the Registered Manager and Quality Assurance team to ensure the home remains compliant with relevant legislation, regulations and organisational policies, including preparation for Ofsted inspections, Regulation 33/34 monitoring and Local Authority compliance visits.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Senior Residential Support Worker or existing Deputy Manager looking to progress their career within children's residential care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Registered Manager with the overall management and effective running of the home.
  • Deputise for the Registered Manager during periods of absence.
  • Help ensure the highest standards of care, safeguarding and support are maintained.
  • Support the implementation and review of young people's care plans and contribute to LAC reviews and other professional meetings.
  • Promote positive outcomes for young people and support them to achieve their full potential.
  • Assist with preparing the home for Ofsted inspections, Regulation 33/34 visits, audits and Local Authority compliance visits.
  • Ensure organisational policies and procedures are implemented consistently.
  • Support staff supervision, appraisals, learning and development.
  • Assist with managing staff performance, disciplinary matters and grievances where required.
  • Participate in recruitment and selection processes.
  • Assist with regular team meetings and service reviews.
  • Monitor staff recording, daily logs, housekeeping, health and hygiene standards.
  • Ensure records are accurate, maintained appropriately and comply with confidentiality and data protection requirements.
  • Support the management of medication in accordance with relevant procedures and professional guidance.
  • Complete and review risk assessments relating to young people, staff and activities.
  • Assist with health and safety checks and ensure appropriate action is taken where risks are identified.Assist with managing an allocated weekly budget.
  • Support internal quality assurance processes and ensure actions are completed within required timescales.
  • Provide management support outside normal hours on a rota basis.
  • Attend management meetings and contribute to the development of the service.
  • Transport and support young people to appointments, school, family contact and activities where required.
About You

We are looking for someone who is passionate about improving outcomes for children and young people and who can demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills.

You will ideally have:

  • Previous experience working in a children's residential home.
  • Experience as a Deputy Manager, Senior Residential Support Worker or Team Leader within an Ofsted-regulated setting.
  • Strong knowledge of safeguarding and children's residential care.
  • Experience supporting young people with challenging or complex needs.
  • An understanding of Ofsted requirements and quality assurance processes.
  • Experience contributing to care plans, risk assessments, reviews and professional meetings.
  • The ability to lead, motivate and support a residential care team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organisational and record‑keeping skills.
  • The ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
  • A commitment to promoting equality, dignity, respect and positive outcomes for young people.
  • The flexibility to provide management support outside normal working hours when required.
Driving Licence

A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is required, as the role involves transporting and supporting young people to school, family contact, appointments and activities.

What We Offer
