Job summary

Portman Recruitment Limited in Manchester is seeking an experienced Deputy Manager for a children's residential home. You will work closely with the Registered Manager, lead staff, ensure safe effective care and supervision, and help shape the quality of care delivered.

The role combines hands-on care with leadership, offers £16.00–£16.50 hourly rate and a sleep-in allowance; 28 days’ annual leave, pension, and mileage payments, with a six-month probation.

Qualifications

  • At least one year's experience in a Senior or supervisory role within a residential children's home.
  • A Level 3 or Level 4 qualification in children and young people's residential care or health and social care, or the ability to achieve the required qualification within your first year of employment.
  • Experience supervising or managing staff.
  • Experience managing resources, including staffing, rotas and budgets.
  • A sound understanding of safeguarding, care planning, risk management and the regulations applicable to children's homes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organisational and report-writing skills.
  • Emotional resilience and the ability to remain calm when managing challenging situations.
  • A driving licence.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Registered Manager with the day-to-day running of the home and take responsibility for the service in their absence.
  • Lead, supervise and mentor Team Leaders and Residential Care Workers.
  • Support staff recruitment, induction, training, supervision and performance appraisals.
  • Organise staff rotas to ensure the home has appropriate cover.
  • Promote safeguarding and respond appropriately to child protection concerns.
  • Ensure placement plans, care plans and risk assessments reflect each young person's needs.
  • Support young people's access to education, healthcare, therapeutic services and activities.
  • Build positive relationships with young people, families, social workers and other professionals.
  • Encourage young people to express their views and participate in decisions about their care.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports and documentation.
  • Support quality assurance, audits and preparation for inspections.
  • Assist with budgets, resources and maintaining a safe home environment.
  • Participate in the on-call rota and provide occasional cover at other homes within the organisation.

Location:Manchester
Salary: £16.00–£16.50 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience
Basic annual equivalent: £33,280–£34,320, based on 40 hours per week
Sleep-in allowance: £50 per night
Hours: 40 hours per week

The Opportunity

We're recruiting an experienced Deputy Manager, or a strong Senior Residential Support Worker ready to progress, to join a children's residential care provider.

Working closely with the Registered Manager, you'll help deliver a safe, nurturing and supportive home for children and young people. You'll combine hands-on care with leadership responsibilities, supporting colleagues to maintain high standards and achieve positive outcomes for each young person.

This is an opportunity to take an active role in the running of a home, develop your management experience and help shape the quality of care delivered.

Your Responsibilities

What We're Looking For

You will need:

  • At least one year's experience in a Senior or supervisory role within a residential children's home.
  • A relevant Level 3 or Level 4 qualification in children and young people's residential care or health and social care, or the ability to achieve the required qualification within your first year of employment.
  • Experience supervising or managing staff.
  • Experience managing resources, including staffing, rotas and budgets.
  • A sound understanding of safeguarding, care planning, risk management and the regulations applicable to children's homes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organisational and report-writing skills.
  • Emotional resilience and the ability to remain calm when managing challenging situations.
  • A practical, flexible approach and a commitment to achieving the best outcomes for young people.
  • A driving licence.
  • Flexibility to undertake on-call duties and support other homes when required.

A relevant Level 5 leadership and management qualification, therapeutic experience and experience of Ofsted inspections would be advantageous.
