Job summary

Nottingham Building Society is investing in a modern data platform on Microsoft Fabric and Azure. As a Data Engineer, you will design, build and operate scalable data solutions, enabling analytics, regulatory reporting and AI-driven insights.

You will join a collaborative team and work with stakeholders across the business to unlock data value, improve governance and deliver high-quality data products for members and colleagues.

Qualifications

  • Strong engineering skills in SQL, Python and PySpark for scalable data solutions.
  • Experience with cloud-based data platforms, ideally in Azure.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric technologies like OneLake and Lakehouse.
  • Knowledge of data modelling, ELT/ETL design, Delta Lake principles and data quality.

Responsibilities

  • Build and operate a scalable data platform using Microsoft Fabric, Azure and Power BI.
  • Create robust data ingestion and transformation pipelines from internal systems and partners.
  • Design Lakehouse, Warehouse and Delta Lake architectures for analytics and reporting.
  • Deliver analytics-ready data assets and semantic models for self-service BI and regulatory reporting.
  • Develop automated deployment pipelines and CI/CD practices with DevOps.

About The Role

Contract type: Permanent Hours: Full-time, 35 hours Location: Head Office, Nottingham (Hybrid working, minimum 2 days per week)

Here’s a taste of what you will be doing as a Data Engineer at Nottingham Building Society:
  • Build Our New Data Platform - Design, develop and operate a scalable, secure and high-performing data platform using Microsoft Fabric, Azure and Power BI technologies.
  • Develop Data Integration Solutions - Create and maintain robust ingestion and transformation pipelines, integrating data from internal systems and third‑party platforms including Salesforce, Sopra Banking Services, CACI and Experian.
  • Engineer Modern Data Architectures - Design Lakehouse, Warehouse and Delta Lake solutions using medallion architectures to support enterprise analytics and reporting.
  • Deliver Analytics-Ready Data Assets - Build trusted, well-modelled datasets and semantic models that enable self‑service BI, regulatory reporting and data‑driven decision making.
  • Champion DataOps & DevOps - Develop automated deployment pipelines, CI/CD processes and engineering standards using Azure DevOps and Git‑based development practices.
  • Drive Data Quality & Governance - Implement controls, monitoring, lineage and governance frameworks that ensure data remains reliable, secure and compliant.
  • Monitor & Optimise Performance - Continuously improve platform performance, observability and operational resilience through proactive monitoring and alerting.
  • Collaborate Across The Business - Work closely with Data Architects, Analysts and business stakeholders to deliver solutions that create meaningful value for members and colleagues.
About You
  • Microsoft Fabric Expertise - You have strong hands‑on experience with Microsoft Fabric technologies including OneLake, Lakehouse, Warehouse, Data Factory, Spark and Power BI.
  • Strong Engineering Skills - You're proficient in SQL, Python and PySpark, with experience developing scalable and maintainable data solutions.
  • Modern Data Platform Experience - You've successfully built, enhanced or operated cloud‑based data platforms, ideally within Azure environments.
  • Data Architecture Knowledge - You understand data modelling, ELT/ETL design, Delta Lake principles, data quality frameworks and modern engineering best practices.
  • Cloud & DevOps Capability - You have experience with Azure services, automation, CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code approaches.
  • Collaborative Mindset - You enjoy working with technical and non‑technical stakeholders, building strong relationships and delivering outcomes together.
  • Continuous Improvement Focus - You're naturally curious, enjoy exploring new technologies and are passionate about improving processes, standards and ways of working.
