Job summary

BT Group is seeking a Data & AI Governance Specialist to embed governance practices across BT’s large, complex organisation. You will work with senior stakeholders to apply governance frameworks, ensure regulatory compliance and drive governance maturity across both customer-facing and corporate units.

You’ll lead governance forums, prepare executive briefings, and help shape the governance agenda. This role offers hybrid working across London, Birmingham or Bristol and opportunities to impact

Qualifications

• Proven experience in Data Governance, Information Governance, Data Management or Governance Risk & Compliance environments.
• Strong understanding of Data Governance frameworks, policies, controls and operating models.
• Experience with regulations and compliance such as GDPR, EU AI Act, Ofcom or similar regulatory frameworks.
• Excellent stakeholder management and ability to influence across multiple business areas.

About the role

As part of our Data & AI Governance team, we're looking for a Data & AI Governance Specialist to help embed effective governance practices across BT Group while supporting our ambition to become the market leader in AI-powered connectivity, solutions and services.

This is a highly visible role operating across both customer-facing and corporate units, helping stakeholders understand and apply Data & AI governance frameworks, regulatory obligations and governance controls. You'll play a key role in driving governance maturity, supporting compliance with evolving regulatory requirements, and ensuring Data & AI governance is embedded into the way BT operates.

Working with senior stakeholders across Digital, Compliance, Risk, Legal, Engineering and Business teams, you'll lead governance forums, support working groups, prepare executive-level briefings and help shape the governance agenda across BT Group.

What you’ll be doing

• Act as the primary Data & AI Governance contact for BT business units, supporting the adoption of governance policies, standards and frameworks.
• Partner with data owners, business stakeholders, engineering teams and compliance functions to embed governance controls and best practices.
• Lead and coordinate Data & AI Governance Working Groups across supported business areas.
• Facilitate unit-level Data & AI Councils and governance forums.
• Prepare governance reporting, risk updates, compliance summaries and executive briefings for senior stakeholders.
• Monitor governance maturity, control adoption and compliance against agreed governance metrics.
• Support implementation of governance controls including data ownership, metadata, classification, retention, quality and AI governance requirements.
• Help business units understand and meet obligations relating to data and AI governance regulations and policies.
• Support the development and delivery of governance awareness sessions, training and communications.
• Collaborate with central governance teams to ensure business requirements are reflected within enterprise governance frameworks.
• Track governance risks, issues and remediation activities while driving continuous improvement.
• Support governance decision-making through evidence-based reporting and analysis.
• Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders across BT Group.
• Contribute to the ongoing evolution of BT's Data & AI Governance operating model.

Essential Skills / Experience

• Proven experience working within Data Governance, Information Governance, Data Management or Governance Risk & Compliance environments.
• Strong understanding of Data Governance frameworks, policies, controls and operating models.
• Experience working with regulations and compliance requirements such as GDPR, EU AI Act, Ofcom or similar regulatory frameworks.
• Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to engage and influence across multiple business areas.
• Experience preparing and presenting governance updates, reports and briefing papers for senior stakeholders.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to translate complex governance topics into clear business outcomes.
• Experience facilitating governance forums, working groups, councils or steering committees.
• Strong understanding of governance controls including data ownership, classification, retention, metadata and data quality.
• Experience tracking governance compliance, risk and maturity metrics.
• Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities across a complex stakeholder environment.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Desirable Skills / Experience

• Experience working within Telecommunications, Technology, Financial Services or other highly regulated industries.
• Knowledge of AI Governance, Responsible AI principles and emerging AI regulatory requirements.
• Understanding of DORA, regulatory control frameworks or operational resilience requirements.
• Familiarity with BT's Key Control Framework (KCF).
• Experience supporting organisation-wide governance transformation initiatives.
• Knowledge of wholesale, Openreach or telecommunications regulatory obligations.
• Experience delivering governance training, awareness programmes or capability uplift initiatives.
• Understanding of data management tools, governance tooling or metadata platforms.

Important Information

• This role can be based in London, Birmingham or Bristol and follows BT's hybrid working model.
