Job description

Overview

This role is within the Cryogenics Systems Team in TE Magnetics (TEM) at Tokamak Energy, addressing the expanding needs of TEM. The successful candidate will support the build and maintenance of cryogenics systems, which include test cryostats for magnets on-site and magnet system deliverables for external clients.

Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain cryogenic systems supporting high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology
  • Participate in specification and design of equipment
  • Assist in building cryogenic systems, focusing on cryogenic-specific tasks such as fitting MLI, thermal pipe insulation, making stycast joints, and setting up vacuum pumps
  • Operate and maintain cryogenic systems, including cryocoolers, compressors, and Liquid Nitrogen systems
  • Contribute to safety reviews and risk assessments
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to develop innovative and complex devices
Minimum Requirements
  • Experience in building, maintaining, or operating cryogenic systems
  • Flexible and adaptable approach to daily tasks
  • Problem-solving skills and proactive initiative
  • Engineering Technician, IEng, or equivalent qualification, or working towards it
  • Willingness to learn and apply new skills
  • Strong self-organization, motivation, and commitment to deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills for working within a diverse team

Safety and Hazard-specific Duties

This role involves safety-critical activities requiring pre-employment health screening, including:

  • Working at heights
  • Working in hot or cold environments
  • Handling electricity (LV)
  • Working with cryogenic fluids and gases
  • Working near high magnetic fields
  • Handling hazardous materials under COSHH regulations
  • Occasional night shifts if needed
