Job summary

Historic England invites applications for a part-time Copyright Project Officer (Creative Content Exchange) in Swindon. The role supports the CCE pilot, reviewing archive collections for inclusion and producing clear, evidence-based copyright assessments and risk analyses.

What you will be doing

We are the nation’s Archive of England’s historic environment. We commit to be open, relevant and reflective of all stories and places so we can better understand the historic environment and how it has shaped our rich and diverse cultural identities. We curate a dynamic collection that tells the story of the shared memories and lived histories of places in England.

The Copyright Project Officer (Creative Content Exchange) will provide specialist archive expertise to support the delivery of Historic England's Creative Content Exchange (CCE) pilot project.

The CCE is a UK government-backed initiative that aims to bring together UK-based creative content owners and businesses looking to use the wealth and range of digital assets held within the collections and archives of UK cultural institutions.

As Copyright Project Officer, you will review Historic England Archive collections to establish their suitability for inclusion within the CCE platform. You will assess which collections can be enabled for the Cultural Content Exchange project (CCE), under what conditions and with what level of risk.

You will undertake rights research, provenance investigation and copyright assessment. You will document decisions clearly and consistently, support risk-managed access and reuse, and contribute to the Archive’s wider work to make collections more accessible, compliant and usable for internal and external audiences.

You will work closely with the Project Manager (Creative Content Exchange), Archive colleagues, Legal Services, Digital teams and external partners.

By providing a clear and evidence-based assessment of content availability and usage restrictions, the role will help enable Historic England to maximise the accessibility and value of its archive collections through the CCE, while ensuring compliance with legal, ethical and organisational requirements.

Who we are looking for

• Experience of copyright, intellectual property rights and rights management in an archive, library, heritage or similar environment.
• Experience of researching archive collections, provenance and ownership to support access and decision-making.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make evidence-based recommendations and assess risk.
• Experience of delivering work within a project environment, managing priorities and maintaining accurate records and documentation.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and with external partners.
