To be responsible for the preparation, production, and finishing of a wide variety of food dishes according to the menu, utilizing modern catering technology, recipes, and work methods. As a Chef/Cook, you'll be the backbone of our culinary operations, creating mouth-watering meals and ensuring our clients are treated to nutritious delights.
Based in Twerton, Bath, you will deliver nutritious mid-day meals to customers within the extra care service at Avondown House or to visitors of our day services. This role offers opportunities to bring your catering expertise to different community groups.
Responsibilities
- Use high-level cooking skills to produce food dishes using modern food technology and methods, including meeting special dietary requests.
- Ensure residents can request preferred foods, that catering staff are aware, and that access to food and snacks is available 24/7, with safe delivery to residents at their chosen locations.
- Assist catering staff with serving, supervision, and replenishment of food.
- Help with routine and in-depth cleaning of kitchens, dining areas, and equipment, following Health & Safety and COSHH regulations.
- Supervise catering assistants, ensuring correct methods and safety rules are followed, including safe use of equipment.
- Contribute to meal planning, supply ordering, stock monitoring, and record keeping.
- Monitor hygiene, health, and safety standards, report faulty equipment, and maintain records of fridge, freezer, and food temperatures per Food Hygiene Regulations.
- Maintain regular contact with catering assistants and customers to ensure satisfaction.
- Participate in induction and ongoing training, including health and safety courses.
- Assist in training new staff.
- Handle small amounts of cash as required.
- Work across different catering units within reasonable travel distances if needed.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Promote the safety and well-being of vulnerable adults, reporting concerns as appropriate.
- Ensure health, safety, and security standards are upheld in the workplace, complying with all relevant regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Service, appropriate to the role.
Requirements
- Must have Enhanced DBS clearance.
- Good communication skills, both oral and written.
- Mandatory training compliance.
- Food Handling & Hygiene certificate.
- Commitment to personal and professional development, including upskilling opportunities.
- First Aid trained to an appropriate level.
- Knowledge of dietary needs for older people and specific requirements.
- Understanding of environmental health regulations.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety and COSHH regulations.
- Flexibility to support various services.
- Experience in data analysis with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Practical cooking skills for large groups, including balanced and special diets, with creativity in menu planning.
- Ability to relate well to older adults.
- Flexibility to cover duties in colleagues' absence.
- Ability to work within budgetary limits.
- Commitment to high hygiene and cleanliness standards.
- Ability to handle conflicting demands and deadlines proactively.
- Responsive and adaptable to residents' dietary needs and challenging situations.
- Knowledge of dietary needs for older adults is desirable but not essential.
