The role offers a blend of strategic responsibility and hands-on leadership, with oversight of maintenance delivery, contractor performance, compliance, grounds operations, and estate improvement initiatives.

You'll join a forward-thinking team that plays a vital role in supporting the organisations students, staff, research activity, and wider campus community.

The Opportunity

As Contracts Manager, you'll be responsible for ensuring the organisations buildings, infrastructure, and engineering assets are maintained to the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and reliability.

Working closely with senior stakeholders, you'll lead maintenance programmes across a varied property portfolio, manage specialist contractors, support capital investment projects, and help shape future estate strategies.

This is a highly visible position requiring strong technical knowledge, excellent stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to balance operational priorities with long-term planning.

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Leading the delivery of maintenance and engineering services across the campus estate.
  • Managing planned and reactive maintenance activities to ensure service continuity.
  • Driving statutory and regulatory compliance across building services and engineering systems.
  • Overseeing external contractors and service providers to ensure quality, safety, and value for money.
  • Providing technical expertise on building services, infrastructure, and asset performance.
  • Supporting budget management, asset planning, and ongoing estate development programmes.
  • Developing collaborative relationships across operational departments and key stakeholders.
  • Managing and developing the support team ensuring outdoor spaces are maintained to a high standard.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve service delivery, efficiency, sustainability, and customer experience.

About You

We're keen to hear from candidates who have experience managing engineering or hard FM services within large and complex environments such as healthcare, local authority, commercial property, defence, manufacturing, or public sector estates.

You'll be a proactive leader who is comfortable managing multiple workstreams, influencing stakeholders, and delivering high standards through both in-house teams and contracted partners.

We're looking for:

  • A qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience managing Hard FM and M&E maintenance services.
  • Strong knowledge of compliance, asset management, and maintenance best practice.
  • Experience overseeing contractors and supplier performance.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience working with CAFM systems and building management technologies.
  • Commercial awareness and experience managing budgets and operational expenditure.
