Applications are invited for the position of Consultant Physician in Endocrinology and Diabetes. This is an exciting opportunity to join our busy and visionary department and have an opportunity to participate in the continuing development and success of the service. The candidate will be expected to integrate within the team of seven other existing full-time consultants in order to provide a complete and high-quality Diabetes, Endocrine and General Medicine service.
We have a strong tradition for team working with a multidisciplinary approach utilising the skills of specialist nurses, dietitians and podiatrists.
There are close links between the hospital and community diabetes services. There is a full range of specialist diabetes clinics including Antenatal, Foot, Renal, Type 1, Complication and Young Persons as well as Endocrine and bariatric clinics with regular MDT meetings.
The department has a very active and expanding research portfolio involving both multinational commercial clinical trial work and investigator initiated trials in various aspects of diabetes and endocrinology as well as research related to diabetes education and patient management strategies.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate extensive experience in Endocrinology, Diabetes and General Internal Medicine.
The principal duties and responsibilities are listed below:-
o Care of general medical emergencies referred by General Practitioners and ED, including on call and post take ward rounds as directed by the Clinical Director.
o Ward rounds for inpatients.
o Review and advise on the management of inpatients referred by other specialists within the hospital.
o Specialist and General Medical Outpatient clinics.
o Close liaison with primary care to further develop diabetes care in the community.
o Teaching of medical students and doctors in training.
o Audit, CPD, Clinical Governance and Annual Appraisal.
o Development and promotion of evidence based practice and guidelines.
o Multidisciplinary team working and leadership.
o Relevant participation in management.
o Research activity.
o Other appropriate duties and responsibilities.
The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:
o The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds.o Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.o Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.
The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.
The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.
