Job summary

Caledonian Sleeper in Glasgow is seeking a Compliance & Risk Lead to steer governance, compliance and enterprise risk management across the organisation. You will report to the General Counsel / Strategy & Compliance Director and embed robust frameworks in a high-profile, publicly owned transport business.

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity to join Caledonian Sleeper as our Compliance & Risk Lead, a strategically important role at the heart of our governance, compliance and risk management arrangements.

Reporting to the General Counsel / Strategy & Compliance Director, you will lead the development, embedding and continuous enhancement of compliance and enterprise risk management frameworks across the organisation.

This role offers a unique opportunity to help shape how Caledonian Sleeper manages risk, demonstrates regulatory compliance and delivers strong governance as a publicly owned organisation. Working closely with senior leaders and stakeholders across the business, you will provide expert guidance, influence decision-making and support the organisation in navigating an increasingly complex regulatory and operational environment.

More than simply maintaining frameworks, you will act as a trusted advisor, helping leaders understand emerging risks, strengthen organisational resilience and embed a culture where accountability, integrity and informed decision-making are part of everyday business practice.

Your work will contribute directly to the achievement of strategic objectives while protecting the organisation's reputation, assets and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate compliance and risk management activities across the organisation.
• Maintain and continuously improve compliance and risk management frameworks.
• Support business areas to identify, assess and manage compliance obligations and organisational risks.
• Maintain risk and compliance registers and oversee monitoring arrangements.
• Deliver compliance and risk awareness initiatives, training and guidance.
• Support governance processes, audits, reviews and assurance activities.
• Influence stakeholders across the business to promote effective risk management and informed decision-making.
• Line manage and support the development of the Compliance Co-ordinator role.

Compliance Management

• Maintain and continuously improve Caledonian Sleeper's compliance framework.
• Manage compliance obligations registers and monitoring arrangements.
• Coordinate compliance reviews, assurance activities and self-assessments.
• Support the development and review of organisational policies, procedures and standards.
• Work with business functions to ensure compliance actions are effectively delivered.
• Maintain robust records and evidence demonstrating organisational compliance.
• Maintain and develop the corporate risk management framework.
• Facilitate risk identification, assessment and review activities across the organisation.
• Manage corporate and departmental risk registers.
• Monitor progress against mitigation plans and elevate concerns where appropriate.
• Produce reporting and management information to support decision-making.
• Promote consistent application of risk management principles across the business.

Compliance, Governance & Culture

• Deliver compliance and risk awareness training and engagement initiatives.
• Develop practical guidance, tools and supporting materials for colleagues.
• Provide advice and support to managers in relation to compliance and risk responsibilities.
• Support governance arrangements, audits, reviews and inspections.
• Coordinate actions arising from governance forums and assurance activities.
• Promote a positive, transparent and ethical organisational culture.
• Provide effective leadership and support to the Compliance Co-ordinator.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen compliance, governance and risk arrangements.
• Support implementation of new compliance and governance initiatives.
• Share good practice and lessons learned across the organisation.
• Champion practical, proportionate approaches to managing risk and compliance obligations.

What We Are Looking For

• Significant experience within compliance, risk management, governance or a related discipline.
• Experience working within a regulated, public sector and/or safety-critical environment.
• Experience maintaining compliance frameworks, risk registers and monitoring arrangements.
• Strong understanding of governance, regulatory compliance and risk management principles.
• Knowledge of key compliance disciplines including data protection, freedom of information, equality legislation and anti-bribery requirements.
• Strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to build effective relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels.
• High levels of integrity, professionalism and attention to detail.
• Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, including SharePoint and reporting tools.
• Professional qualification in compliance, risk management, governance or a related discipline.
• Experience within the rail, transport or wider public sector sectors.
• Experience supporting organisational policy and governance frameworks.
• Experience administering or maintaining corporate risk and compliance systems.
• Knowledge of Scottish public sector governance requirements.
• Experience of contract, grant or regulatory compliance monitoring.
