Summary:

A major civil engineering contractor providing a wide range of specialist contracting services to support the successful delivery of major infrastructure projects throughout the UK is seeking an experienced commercial leader to join their team. As Commercial Director, you will shape the business strategy and drive commercial success. You will be responsible for commercial management, developing and implementing revenue growth strategies and expanding market presence.

Role and Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with the Managing Director to develop and manage the strategic business plan.
  2. Set and agree budgets and forecasts in line with the strategic business plan.
  3. Recruit, train, and effectively deploy commercial staff.
  4. Maximise financial returns on projects through strategic management.
  5. Identify and mitigate commercial risks, developing solutions as needed.
  6. Review and negotiate terms and conditions of contracts/subcontracts pre and post tender award.
  7. Manage and resolve commercial disputes.
  8. Monitor Business Unit costs to remain within budget constraints.
  9. Define the commercial parameters of contracts accurately.
  10. Maintain healthy cash flow within the Business as a whole.
  11. Provide commercial support and guidance to the Business Unit Management Teams.
  12. Support estimating and bidding processes with commercial and contractual expertise.
  13. Contribute to the commercial requirements of pre-qualification and tender documents.
  14. Promote best practices and continuous improvement in all commercial processes.
  15. Serve as a visible commercial contact for client senior management and respond to issues as they arise.
  16. Ensure thorough tender handovers so that pricing strategies, risks, and opportunities are communicated effectively to the project team.
  17. Aid in the development and management of the Business forecasts and strategic Plan.
  18. Develop and implement commercial strategies that align with the company's goals and objectives.
  19. Oversee the business development, bidding and tendering teams to ensure cohesive and effective execution of strategies.
  20. Identify new business opportunities and build strong relationships with major stakeholders, including clients, partners and industry leaders.
  21. Undertake other tasks as directed by the Managing Director.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Proven experience in a lead commercial role (Commercial Director, Senior Commercial Manager, or Regional Commercial Manager) within a multi-disciplinary contracting environment.
  2. Relevant qualification in Quantity Surveying or Commercial Management (Degree level).
  3. Ideally MRICS.
  4. Excellent understanding and experience with all NEC forms of contract.
  5. Experience managing multi-disciplinary contracting projects in a contracting environment.
  6. Excellent team leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
  7. Strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships.
  8. High level of analytical and strategic thinking, with the ability to make data-driven decisions.
  9. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
