Job summary

Reed Specialist Recruitment is seeking an experienced CNC Machinist/Toolmaker to join a precision engineering environment in Bath. You will join a skilled toolroom team responsible for tooling, fixtures, and precision components to tight tolerances, programming, setting, and operating CNC machinery while upholding quality and efficiency.

You will work from engineering drawings, support production needs, and contribute to process improvements.

Qualifications

• Apprenticeship trained engineer with City & Guilds/NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
• Proven CNC machining experience in precision engineering.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Experience programming and operating CNC lathes and milling machines.
• Familiarity with CAD/CAM or offline programming software.

Responsibilities

• Programming, setting, and operating CNC machine tools.
• Manufacturing tooling, jigs, fixtures, and machine spares.
• Support production machining requirements when required.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Produce precision components to tight tolerances.
• Ensure quality standards and inspection requirements are met.
• Identify and implement process improvements to maximise efficiency and reduce waste.
• Mentor apprentices in the workshop.

Job description

We are currently recruiting for an experienced CNC Machinist / Toolmaker to join a well-established precision engineering and manufacturing business. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a skilled toolroom team, producing high-quality tooling, fixtures, jigs, and precision-machined components that support a busy production environment.

The Role

Reporting to the Toolroom Supervisor, you will play a key role in manufacturing tooling, machine spares, and precision components to tight tolerances. You will be responsible for programming, setting, and operating a variety of CNC machinery while ensuring quality, efficiency, and production targets are consistently achieved.

Key Responsibilities

• Programming, setting, and operating CNC machine tools.
• Manufacturing tooling, jigs, fixtures, and machine spares.
• Supporting production machining requirements when required.
• Working from engineering drawings and technical specifications.
• Producing precision components to exact tolerances.
• Ensuring all quality standards and inspection requirements are met.
• Identifying and implementing process improvements to maximise efficiency and reduce waste.
• Maintaining machine performance and improving cycle times where possible.
• Supporting and mentoring apprentices within the workshop.

Promoting a positive team-focused culture and safe working environment.

Skills & Experience Required

• Apprenticeship trained engineer (City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent).
• Strong background in CNC machining within a precision engineering environment.
• Experience programming and operating CNC lathes and milling machines.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and process specifications.
• Proven experience producing high-quality components to tight tolerances.
• Experience with CAD/CAM or offline programming software.
• Knowledge of a variety of machining processes and metalworking techniques.
• Good PC skills including Microsoft Office applications.
• Strong commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and health & safety.

Desirable Experience

• CNC milling and turning experience.
• Knowledge of ProtoTRAK, Siemens 828D, or similar control systems.
• Experience using SolidCAM or equivalent CAD/CAM software.
• Toolroom or tooling manufacture experience.

Working Hours
