You will read drawings, work to tight tolerances, and support tooling trials and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a CNC Machinist, setter/operator or Toolmaker in a precision environment
• Able to read and interpret engineering drawings and work to tight tolerances
• Experience reading precision measuring equipment and performing inspections

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate CNC milling and turning machines to produce tooling components
• Manufacture tooling, inserts, jigs, fixtures and components from drawings and CAD data
• Carry out manual machining and repairs as required
• Perform preventative maintenance on tooling and diagnose faults
• Maintain tooling records and ensure a clean, safe workspace
• Support tooling trials and process improvements

CNC machinist/toolmaker

Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire Job type: Permanent, full time Salary: £32,500 - £36,500 per annum, dependent on experience

The role

We are recruiting a CNC Machinist or Toolmaker on behalf of a well-established precision manufacturing business based in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. Reporting to the Toolroom Manager, you will be responsible for the manufacture, maintenance, repair, and modification of production tooling and associated components, working across CNC machining, bench fitting, fault finding, and preventative maintenance.

Main responsibilities

• Set up and operate CNC milling and turning machines to produce precision tooling components
• Manufacture new tooling, inserts, jigs, fixtures, and components from engineering drawings and CAD data
• Carry out manual machining operations including milling, grinding, drilling, and turning as required
• Perform planned preventative maintenance on production tooling and diagnose and repair faults
• Strip, inspect, clean, repair, and reassemble tooling, polishing to required surface finish standards
• Verify dimensions and tolerances using precision measuring equipment
• Provide tooling support to production teams and respond promptly to tooling breakdowns
• Assist with tool trials, validation, and process improvement activities
• Support new product introductions and tooling modifications
• Maintain accurate tooling records and a clean, safe, organised working environment

Skills/experience

Essential:

• Proven experience as a CNC Machinist, CNC Setter Operator, or Toolmaker within a precision manufacturing or engineering environment
• Experience operating and setting CNC milling and/or turning machines
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and work to tight tolerances
• Experience using precision measuring equipment
• Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
• Relevant engineering qualification such as an apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, City and Guilds, or BTEC (desirable but not essential with strong experience)
• Able to work independently and as part of a team

Desirable:

• Toolroom experience including bench fitting, assembly, and tooling maintenance
• Experience with CAD/CAM software
• Experience with EDM, wire erosion, or spark erosion processes
• HNC/HND in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering
• Experience with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement techniques

Salary & working hours

• Salary: £32,500 - £36,500 per annum, dependent on experience
• Hours: Daytime hours, Monday to Friday
