Job summary

HMRC is seeking an Infrastructure Operations Engineer to ensure reliable, secure cloud platforms and drive continual improvement across AWS/Azure environments. You will manage incidents, automate with IaC, and support security/compliance while optimising cost and performance.

You will mentor engineers, collaborate with platform teams, and contribute to technical leadership. Travel to Telford for office-based work is expected, with 60% of time on-site.

Qualifications

• Experience operating in AWS, or Azure.
• Proven incident & problem management, and root-cause analysis capability.
• Proficiency with Linux systems administration.
• Capability in Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred).
• Knowledge of GitLab CI/CD, including pipeline design, runners, and secrets management.
• Scripting skills (e.g. Python, Go, or Bash).

Responsibilities

• Own the operational health of Cloud platforms and resolve incidents.
• Develop and maintain IaC using Terraform; implement CI/CD with GitLab.
• Apply cloud security best practices and support audits.
• Analyse value/cost/performance to optimise spend and capacity.
• Mentor engineers and share best practices across Platform teams.
• Lead by example; mentor junior staff and contribute to technical leadership.
• Apply critical thinking to problem-solving and drive informed decisions.
