Job summary

Motorway in London is seeking a Platform Engineer to own and evolve AWS environments and shared platform infrastructure, focusing on reliability, scalability, and self-service tooling for product teams.

Responsibilities include automating workflows with infrastructure-as-code, defining monitoring and alerting standards, enabling teams with shared metrics, supporting continuous delivery and zero-downtime deployments, and mentoring peers in a fast-moving, collaborative engineering culture.

Qualifications

• Proven track record of owning and operating web platforms in production at scale.
• Strong production experience with AWS.
• Experience defining meaningful metrics, monitoring, and alerting for web platforms.
• Experience with platform-level security controls and observability.
• Experience designing and operating continuous delivery systems for safe, repeatable, zero-downtime deployments.
• Comfortable with command-line tools and environments.
• Proficient in at least one programming language used for automation or tooling.
• Enjoy mentoring and sharing knowledge within the team and wider engineering organisation.

Responsibilities

• Own and evolve AWS environments and shared platform infrastructure, focusing on reliability, scalability, and ease of use for product teams.
• Design and build opinionated, self-service tooling for building, deploying, and operating services correctly.
• Automate common workflows and standardise infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code and platform abstractions.
• Define and implement platform-level monitoring and alerting standards with meaningful signals.
• Enable product teams to use shared metrics and signals to understand and improve service reliability across environments.
• Own and evolve continuous delivery and release capabilities while maintaining reliability and safety.
• Apply current best practices in application hosting, continuous delivery, and developer experience to the platform.
• Upskill and mentor other engineers in the team.
• Make trade-offs, anticipate failure modes, and help the team avoid repeating past mistakes.
• Respond to production incidents in an on-call environment and improve systems based on lessons learned.
